HOW TO ACQUIRE THINGS(Without waiting for holidays, anniversaries, or birthdays)Let's say you want to collect a particular type of item as souvenirs. For example, cardboard beer coasters. You must first determine likely places to find the items you desire without spending much, if any, money. I suggest sidewalk seating at European beer halls. Of course, you must order an ale to qualify for a chair. Remove your mug from the coaster before moisture blots the cardboard and you're on your way! From there, you refine your technique by slowly strolling by other drinking establishments and swiftly filching unguarded coasters. You'll soon have enough different breweries represented to transform an unsightly coffee table with a different unsightly mess.
You'd be surprised at how many merchants and businesses are pleased to give you something for nothing! I have mugs, ball point pens, baseball caps, mouse pads, and golf balls at no cost! Just ask. You're cheap advertising. There's no shame attached to taking home the left-over bread or rolls from the restaurant. You paid for them on your bill and, besides, it's against Board of Health rules to re-use those items. (Yes, I know - restaurants reuse them for croutons, stuffing, and breading but that doesn't make the practice right.) Don't forget the doggy bag!
If you've had trouble navigating an online catalog that offers a 5% discount IF you order online, try mentioning your frustration to the phone order taker. Chances are that you'll get your discount, anyway. Never hurts to ask, does it? City-wide "Clean Up" days can be a treasure hunt. Garage sale 'free' baskets' are not to be overlooked, either. You may discover the missing part to something at home. Who knows? If nothing else, you can always put the junk next to your own curb and someone (hopefully) will steal it from you.
There's a place to get free things (www.thefreesite.com) but I'm afraid to venture there. I get enough junk mail and spam already, but then I'm chicken about asking for things!!!! One last thought: Don't park your car too close to trees or sit down to rest on a shady bench. You just might get something you DIDN'T ask for.
