6.1- Catching the Legends

There are 11 Pokemon that are usually considered "legendary". Of these 11, 6 cannot be caught in Crystal: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, and Celebi. Giving advice on catching the first four would be off-topic, as they are only in Red, Blue, and Yellow. The other two can only be snagged at Nintendo events or by Gameshark.

The other 5 legends, then, are Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, and Ho-oh.

To even get a whiff of Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, you'll need to set them free in the Burned Tower. Do that by approaching them after whupping the Rival.

Next, you can go after the beasts in the wild. Raikou and Entei are all over the place, but Suicune has a pattern. After freeing it, play up to Cianwood Island. Go up to the extreme north of town, and you'll see Suicune. It'll dart after that. (You'll have to fight Eusuine, the Suicune hunter, at this point). Beat him and continue on.

Recommended Suicune Capture equipment: A Jynx at L37 or a Grass Pokemon (Jumpluff?) at L35.
A Quick Claw (attached to the Pokemon). The move Lovely Kiss, Sleep Powder, or Spore.
A Pokemon with Night Shade, Seismic Toss, or False Swipe at about L35. About 30 Ultra Balls or several Heavy Balls.

After putting Team Rocket out of business for good in Goldenrod, the Director will give you the Clear Bell. When you get this, go back to Ecruteak City and go to the middle of town, then north. This leads to the Tin Tower. Follow the path, and you'll meet the Wise Trio. Beat them, and
you have a chance to grab Suicune. SAVE NOW!!!

When you meet Suicune, have the Pokemon with the weakening move fight it until it's at least in the red for health. Then, send in Jynx or the Grass type. Put it to sleep, then chuck the balls. Eventually, you should have a Suicune!

Now that Suicune's been caught, you can try to catch the other two mystical beasts, Raikou and Entei. They wander all around the grass of Johto, so you'll need to track them. To do this, trade for them! Send them right back, and you'll have their Pokedex data, allowing you to track them without having to stumble across them.

Recommended Raikou/Entei Capture equipment:
The same as Suicune, with Fast Balls and Heavy Balls.
About 50 Max Repels.
A Pokemon with Fly.

Use the Fly Pokemon to go to Cherrygrove City. Cherrygrove is a central location, with easy access to two grassy areas. Keep checking the Pokedex until one of them is two routes from you (either on Route 46 or Route 31). Move onto the route between you, and check again. If they moved to you, sweet. If not, Fly to Cherrygrove and start again.

Eventually, you'll be on the same route as a Beast. Use a Repel, then
SAVE THE GAME!

This time, lead with the Sleeper. Put the beast to Sleep, then wear it down. (You might find that the Sleep Pokemon's attacks would work better, and you don't have to switch. Example: Jynx's Ice Punch and Doubleslap attacks.) When the Beast is at a sliver of life and asleep, chuck Heavy
Balls or Fast Balls until you snag the Beast.

Repeat the process, and you'll have all three Beasts.

Next up is the L60 Ho-oh. To get to Ho-oh, you need to have Raikou, Entei, and Suicune in your party, and the Hall of Fame must be unlocked. (Re: Beat the Elite 4.) Go back to Ecruteak and talk to the Wise Trio. This time, they'll give you the Rainbow Wing. Now, you can climb the Tin Tower itself.

Recommended Ho-oh Capture equipment:
A Pokemon with a Sleep move that's about L55, holding Quick Claw.
A Seismic Toss, Night Shade, or False Swipe Pokemon at about L60.
25 Ultra Balls, and several Heavy Balls.

TIN TOWER

Items: Full Heal, Ultra Ball, Escape Rope, Max Revive, Full Restore, Rare Candy, Super Potion, Nugget, Max Elixir
Pokemon: Rattata (MAE), Gastly (E), Ho-oh

The first couple of floors are easy, so the 3rd is where the fun begins. First, go left to the Full Heal. Then, double back and go to the right, then up and left. Go right past the pillar, then up the stairs.

4th floor: From the stairs, go one ramp down, one left, down to the Ultra Ball, right one ramp, down to the PP Up, left all the way to the Escape Rope, up and right to the pillar, up and left to the stairs.

5th floor: From the top of the screen, take 2 ramps right, down 1, 2 left, 5 down, 2 right, and 1 down to the stairs.

6th floor: Just walk around to the staircase.

7th floor: Go all the way around to the Max Revive, down, and to the left about half-distance. Then walk down to the teleporter.

From there, just follow the teleport pads until you're on the 9th floor, near the pillar. Take the stairs on the other side up to the top of the tower. SAVE HERE!!

When you encounter Ho-oh, it's L60. Lead with the Sleep Pokemon again, and put Ho-oh to sleep. Then, switch in the Swiper/Shader/Tosser and knock Ho-oh around for a while. (Thick Club-equipped Marowak does this really well. Especially after a Swords Dance or two.) If Ho-oh wakes up, send the Sleep Pokemon back in and Sleep it, or it's gonna Recover everything, then
Safeguard, messing the strategy up.

Eventually, you'll have Ho-oh sleeping and at very low health. Now start chucking Balls... you'll eventually get Ho-oh.

The final Legend is the Psychic/Flying type Lugia. This time, don't mess around with Sleep/weakening. Bring the Master Ball.

Getting to Lugia can be a pain. You'll need Surf and Whirlpool to even get in the door, and Flash to see. Then, you'll need Surf to get to Lugia. Also, bring an Escape Rope to get the heck out of there when it's all over. Finally, don't forget the Silver Wing that's in Pewter City.

WHIRL ISLANDS

Items: Max Revive (I'm not kidding: That's the only item on the way to
Lugia)
Pokemon: Krabby (MAE), Seel (MAE), Zubat (MAE), Golbat (MAE),
Horsea (MAE), Seadra (MAE), Tentacool (MAE), Tentacruel (MAE), Lugia

Surf down from Olivine to Route 41's Whirl Islands. Take the north-eastern most entrance, and you'll be on the right path. When you enter, kick up a Flash. Then, go right and jump off at the top point and go down.

Now, follow the high path to a ladder. Go down the ladder and snag the Max Revive, then Surf down the waterfall. Go in the door, and Surf to Lugia. If your box isn't full, then just engage Lugia, use the Master Ball, and get out with the Escape Rope.

(I'll let you explore the rest of the islands by yourself: This is the only place to catch Horsea and Seel, plus you can build EXP for that Electric Pokemon you're working on.)
