The "box trick" Go fight some wild pokemon (about 20) Go to a pokecenter Deposit the pokemon you used in a box, take it out and its stats should be raised For a list of good wild pokemon to fight check Phil's website (provided later in this document) Also after you fight in the following deposit the pokemon you used, it will work too: Your rival, The battle a day, The fast ship, The bug contest *NOTE: there is a sort of Urban Legend saying you shouldn't heal your pokemon. According to Phil Erwin, healing your pokemon before you box-trick them doesn't matter (as far as he can see) HOWEVER there is really no need to heal your pokemon in the game at all, since when you deposit and withdraw them they are fully healed. So I still suggest you ignore healing your pokemon all together, and just boxing them.* Shiny Ditto Trick To get a shiny ditto do the following: 1.Trade your shiny Gyrados to a Red/Blue/Yellow version. 2.Teach Mimic to your Gyrados. 3. Trade is back to G/S/C 4. Delete the every move on your Gyrados (except mimic, this ensures your chances of ditto the ditto not using another attack) 5. Trade your Gyrados back to R/B/Y 6. Battle a wild Ditto. Use Mimic on Ditto's Transform. 7.Ditto will use Transform. Now he's a Gyrados. 8.Use Transform on him. He Transform into you again. 9.Capture the Ditto. 10.Trade Ditto back to Gold, Silver, or Crystal. The Ditto will now be shiny! *note I say shiny Gyrados, because its the easiest to catch, you can use any shiny that existed in the "past" and could learn mimic (I used my shiny ratatta)* The Mewtation Glitch this little glitch was just recently found. I consider this glitch to be almost on-par with sharking, but since it can't corrupt your game it gets plus points there. Anyway this glitch is only applicable to Mew and Ditto (at least its limited to those). Here's how to do it. Step 1 do mystery gift with another person who has a Smeargle with sketch and one other move that can be used to knock it out and another pokemon with only the desired move. Step 2 go to the trainer house in viridian city and battle the trainer. Transform into the Smeargle and knock it out without using sketch. Step 3 let the remaining pokemon use its move then sketch it. The move should replace transform when the battle finishes. Thanks to Jason322 for this info. Step 4: Use Pokemon Stadium 2 (providing you have access) and the Move Re-learner to re-learn Transform and start all over again. This way you can get four different moves on. 2. Phone Numbers As you know, In Pokemon crystal, there is a new feature to the phone numbers. People will still phone you to battle, but some will phone and give you stuff :) Getting more Phone calls: This is fairly easy to do, first go to your mother (the one in the game not your real one XD) Get her to change the time from DST to non-DST (or vice-versa) As soon as she is done you should get a call. Keep doing this until you get the call you want. Phone Numbers: All trainers will call you at times to either talk, ask for a rematch or something else. Q: What are DVs? A: DVs are commonly known as Diversification Values. They are numbers that range from 0-15(0-F in HEX) that determine how high a certain stat is for a Pokémon. Think of DVs as genes. Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special stats have a DV. Special isn't split because of the backwards compatibility that Crystal needs. The DV for HP is derived from the other four DVs. The maximum a DV can get is 15, or F. That means that Pokémon will get the highest possible number for that stat for that Pokémon. For each number lower than 15, you subtract 2 from the Pokémon's max stats. So a Pokémon with a DV of 0 will be 30 points from its max, while a Pokémon with a DV of 15 will have the max for that stat. To calculate the DVs of a Pokémon, get a ton of Rare Candies and level it up to Lv 100. Then put them in a PC box and remove them until their stats don't raise anymore. Then compare the stats of your Pokémon to the stats of the max (which are in the Pokédex of this document). Use the following chart to get the DVs of your Pokémon. DV # Off of Max Stat --------------------- 15 0 14 -2 13 -4 12 -6 11 -8 10 -10 9 -12 8 -14 7 -16 6 -18 5 -20 4 -22 3 -24 2 -26 1 -28 0 -30 So if your Tyranitar's Attack is 14 points less than the max, his Attack DV is 8. Not too shabby. To get the DV for your Pokémon's HP, you must know the DVs for all the other stats; Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. Use this formula: Start with H = 0 If the Attack DV is odd, add 8. If not, add 0. If the Defense DV is odd, add 4. If not, add 0. If the Speed DV is odd, add 2. If not, add 0. If the Special DV is odd, add 1. If not, add 0. Whatever H equals at the end is your HP DV. So it's like this: H = 0 My Attack DV is even, so I add 0. My Defense DV is odd, so I add 4. My Speed DV is odd too, so I'll add 2. My Special DV is even, so I'll add 0. H = 0 H 0 + 0 H = 0 H 0 + 4 H = 4 H 4 + 2 H = 6 H 6 + 0 H = 6 <---final answer Simple algebra's not all that bad, now is it? - - - - - Q: Is there an easier way to calculate the DVs of my Pokémon? A: Actually, there *is* a way. A friend of mine named Phil Erwin coded an MS-DOS application where you can figure them out without a lot of effort. All you need is your GameBoy Color handy. You can find the "DV Calculator" at Phil's site: http://www.geocities.com/thelegendarydogs/ Phil's site has a lot of resources to learn more about the mathematical side of the game, including a method to figure out your Hidden Power type. - - - - - Q: Hidden Power? How do I figure that out? A: DVs directly affect your Hidden Power, so I suggest you figure out your DVs first, either by the calculator, or by doing it yourself. Hidden Power is a Normal-type move that's type and power is dependent on the user's DVs. The strength ranges from 31-70, and it can be every type but Normal. Be careful with HP(acronym for Hidden Power), it's still normal type, so if your Jolteon uses Hidden Power Ice on a Golem, that Golem can COUNTER it right back in your face. Not pretty. Okay, first off, get the DVs of your Pokémon. Now convert each DV into a binary number (Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special; in that order). If DV = 8 or more, let # = 1. If DV = 7 or less, let # = 0. Plug the DVs into a 4 digit binary number. For instance, suppose I have a Typhlosion with DVs of 5, 8, 10, and 15. My binary number would be 0111. Use this chart to figure out what X will equal. Binary X ---------- 0000 0 0001 1 0010 2 0011 3 0100 4 0101 5 0110 6 0111 7 1000 8 1001 9 1010 10 1011 11 1100 12 1101 13 1110 14 1111 15 So now my number is 7. Okay, now take a look at your Special DV number. In my example, mine's 15. Looking at the above chart, take the last two digits of the number and transfer them into a binary number. Mine was 15, so I get 11, which is 3 in binary. If the DV is, say, 13, then the number for Y would be 1. Now take the two numbers(your combined DV binary number and your special split number), and plug them into the following formula: Base Power = ([X × 5 + Y] ÷ 2) + 31 Using my example, X would be 7 and Y would be 3. Now use the order of operations to solve the _expression. For those of you who don't know what PEMDAS is, I'll go through it with you: P arentheses/Brackets E xponents M ultiplication(left to right) D ivision(left to right) A ddition(left to right) S ubtraction(left to right) Now let's solve our problem. ([X × 5 + Y] ÷ 2) + 31 ([7 × 5 + 3] ÷ 2) + 31 ([35 + 3] ÷ 2) + 31 ([38] ÷ 2) + 31 (19) + 31 50 = Base Power Okay, so my Typhlosion's Hidden Power has a Base Power of 50. Not too bad. Now the question is "What type are we going to be hitting with?" Simple. Take a look at your Attack and Defense DVs, then convert them to binary numbers. Using the last two digits of each, mash them together to get another binary number, which will determine your HP type. I'll use my Typhlosion again: 0101 = 5 1000 = 8 Okay, so I should mash 01 and 00 together. That will give me 0100, which is 4 in binary. Use this list to determine your Hidden Power type, and you're done! Value Binary Type ------------------- 15 1111 Dark 14 1110 Dragon 13 1101 Ice 12 1100 Psychic 11 1011 Electric 10 1010 Grass 9 1001 Water 8 1000 Fire 7 0111 Steel 6 0110 Ghost 5 0101 Bug 4 0100 Rock 3 0011 Ground 2 0010 Poison 1 0001 Flying 0 0000 Fighting Okay, 0100 is 4 in binary, which means that my Typhlosion will have HIDDEN POWER ROCK. That's not the best it could be, but it could definitely help against Dragonite since he's only affected normally by Thunder Punch. Note: As I've mentioned before, regardless of what type the game registers HP as, it's still recognized as a NORMAL type move and can be COUNTERed, so be careful when using it. 14.
