The Tate House
Hazel Green, Alabama
I visited this house on many occasions growing up. It is located near my grandparent's home just a short walk through the woods. I have experienced many unexplained things on this property while growing up. For example, I have seen an older white man, from a distance, dressed in work clothes (overalls, button up shirt, sometimes a wide brimmed hat) at the house and in the area of the barn. When I got close to where I saw him, there was no sign of anyone around. No tracks and nothing had been disturbed.

I spoke with my grandparents about the property. They told me that a man with the last name of Tate lived there. He raised his family there and worked his farm from the late 1800's until the 1940's, when he took his life in the barn.  He was buried in a grave in front of the house. No one lived there after that.

In the late 1980's, the current owner of the land (who asked that we did not print his name), started to renovate the house into a hunting cabin for his friends and himself.  One night while working on the cabin he said he experienced something that scared him. He gathered his personal belongings and left. He still hunts on the property but will not go back in the cabin. I tried to get him to elaborate on what happened, but he would not say anymore about it.

Monday, November 4, 2002 Bill, Terry and I went to document the house. These are the notes and photos taken at the house and in the area where the barn used to be.
