WRAP YOUR MOUTH AROUND THESE
People are forever asking what terms like 'bear', 'cub', 'otter', etc. mean. Odd that they never ask what 'gay' means - oh, wait, that's because that is understood as meaning a lover of show tunes, drunk straight boys and oppression, all set to a lovely minstrel-show song-and-dance. Silly me...*
So here's a glossary that I hope will be as useful to you as terms like 'straight-acting' or 'femme' are to me. :)
*THE BEAR SAYS ROAR!
(1) BEAR - as a verb, to endure and suffer with dignity, especially as it applies to being around skinny gay men who think even one extra pound is more evil than a day without Madonna. As a noun, a big hairy creature with claws and a ferocious attitude (cf 'nun' or 'cop'). as an adjective, a way of describing a market unfriendly to the hostile.
(2) CUB - a young boy prone to tying knots, hanging out in tents with older men, (claiming later, lying through his teeth, to have tricked with either said older men or other cubs), and reading a handbook written by one such more senior fellow who had a companion he called 'Boy'.
(3) WOLF - verb. What stocky gents dressed in plaid, leather or flannel do to the food at all-you-can-eat buffets. cf. 'locust'.
(4) OTTER - slang contraction of 'ought to'. e.g. 'You otter come with us. We're going to wolf down some food and then tie knots with some cubs!'
(5) BEAR RUN - a verb and a noun which have been combined in laboratory conditions, but have never been observed in the wild.
(6) HUSBEAR - No. Just no. If Prop 8 has had a good effect, then it is in STOMPING on this word. (ed. note: I suppose, in this humourless, irrational age, I am obliged to point out I am being sarcastic here).
(7) BOYFRIEND - someone with whom you share the occasional movie, concert, boys-night-out or oral-genital/oral-anal/anal-genital/etc. contact.
(8) GIRLFRIEND - see 'boyfriend' after one too many Cosmos or a Mamma Mia/AbFab marathon.
(9) PARTNER - Someone to whom you are connected by ties of finance, duty or stultifying bourgeois boredom.
(10) GRIZZLY - a misspelt way of referring to something ghastly or revolting to the eye, such as Carrot Top. the size range at American Apparel or David Duchovny doing a z-snap.
(11) WOOF - the counterpart of 'warp'. This should tell you all you need to know about it. If not, think of it like 'aloha', 'shalom' or 'smurf'. It means many things, is often heard only in small communities or villages and, like the first term, can get you lei'd. *
(12) TWINK - A piece of fluffy cake with a toxic interior, which, nevertheless, seems capable of surviving both a nuclear attack and a growing awareness that it is unfilling and bad for you.
