Week 2
Plant Growth & Development
Plant Needs
We learned about plant needs by making a chart listing plant needs

P.L.A.N.T. Needs
P. Place-in a container or garden
L. Light- sun or artificial light
A. Air-oxygen and carbon dioxide
N. Nutrients-nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
T. Thirsty-plants, like all living things, need water
S. Soil-to grow roots in

What's Not The Same?
We learned about variables and constants by performing an experiment with plants grown in sunlight, artificial light and no light,  and filling out the "Light Variable Lab Sheet"

Plant People
We demonstrated our understanding of plant needs by creating "Dirt Babies" using grass seed and potting soil in nylon stockings.
Plant Growth
"Some hitchhike, some hide, some float away, some are buried, some are blown and some just have to stay".

Coconut Float
We illustrated the different ways seeds are dispersed by performing  a rhyme, "Coconut Float".
Plant Processes

Oxygen Factory
We illustrated the process of photosynthesis by completing the "Oxygen Factory Illustration Page".

Gas Gobblers
We demonstrated the interdependence people and animals share with plants through the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide by playing a game using soap bubbles. The bubble blowers & soap bubbles represented oxygen given off by the plants. The bubble bursters represented people and animals using the oxygen. Not all of the people and animals could get enough "oxygen bubbles" when we removed most of the bubble blowing plants.
Propagation

Gallon Greenhouses
We showed an understanding of the enviroment needed to propagate plants by creating mini greenhouses using the bottom halves of gallon milk jugs and gallon size baggies.

Propagation Demonstration
We propagated plants by direct seeding, stem cuttings, leaf cuttings, root cuttings, division and layering in our gallong greenhouses.
Service Project
We planted and are maintaining a bed at the Cann Gardens.
