After graduation I struggled with not knowing what I wanted to do and after deciding that I did not want to work in my family’s business I returned to work at Food Fair. In June I rented an apartment in Pompano Beach. This began my life on my own, but after a few months I returned home and decided to attend Drake College In Fort Lauderdale. This lasted a few months but since I had already been out on my own I made the move again this time for good.
I lucked into an entry level job at First National Bank in Pompano and stayed there for a year before taking a job with American National Bank in Fort Lauderdale. This move resulted in a 40 year banking career that ended when I retired at age 58 ten years ago.
In 1960 I married Margarita McDaniel and in 1961 we were one of the first couples to move into the 6th addition in Margate. Kathryn was born in 1965 and Steven was born in 1967. Margarita and I divorced in 1973 but we remain friends to this day so family functions are enjoyable.
In the early 1990s I made 4 trips to Alaska and became quite interested in the state. I traveled through it and on the first trip made the decision to work out there in the Summer. I retired in 1996, but was unable to go then due to my parent’s health. After they were gone I took a summer position as a Passenger Service Representative for Princess Tours and I work in Anchorage every summer.
Somewhere along the line I also became interested in Savannah, Georgia and I spend some of the winter months there working in the Hotel industry. Maybe some day I will cut my ties to South Florida and move there as I really enjoy the Deep South.
Life has been good to me and I am most grateful for the breaks that I had along the way.
