Phyllis Mary Dewey (Freedman)
After graduation from PBHS, Phyllis attended the Univ. of Florida to become
a teacher.
It didn't take her long in the real world to learn that teaching was not her
forte;
all that detail and dreaming about her students! So off she went to Florida
State to
get a degree in Library science. Several years later she attended the Univ.
of
Pittsburgh for a PhD. in Library Science.
Her professional library career has led her through several libraries and
states.
After a 13 year stint at the Orlando Public Library and the Univ. of
Pittsburgh,
she worked in a community college. She then went to West Virginia, to the
little
town of Salem, home of Salem International University, to direct the
University
Library. The international student body of the University has allowed her
to
interact with a many cultures, a long-time interest.
In Salem, she also has continued an interest in local government that began
in
Orlando, where she set up a library in City Hall. She has served on City
Council, and continues her interest by
chairing the Planning Commission for the City of Salem.
However, she does miss sunny (and warm) Florida.
