In New Zealand, the Maori people are known for their distinctive
facial tattoos, called moko. The skin is carved with a chiseling tool
to make grooves. This process is a combination of scarification and tattoo.

Male moko covered the entire face, sometimes omitting the middle of the forehead.
Female moko covered the lips or chin, sometimes both.

Both genders tattooed the thighs.

The Maori are known for their use of spiral designs in tattooing and art.
