Castle Clinton (named after DeWitt Clinton, Mayor of New York City) began as the South-west Battery in 1811, built during the "fortification fever" that swept New York after the British attack on the Chesapeake. It was later used for public entertainment, an immigrant landing depot and an aquarium. Authorized August 12, 1946.
