To the past and present of the beagle.
The beagle is a member of the hound group. It is a hunting dog, mainly used for hunting rabbits. Although some are kept as pets. Some are show dogs also.  There are two sizes of beagles, the 13 inch and the 15 inch. Check out the AKC web site for more information pertaining to showing beagles. The beagles coat is short and requires only some grooming compared to the yorkie and so forth. They do require exersize. They were breed to hunt in packs and should get along with other dogs. But be sure who you are buying your beagle dog/puppy from. Bad breeders can turn even the gentliest of dogs into mean dogs.  Beagles are known for following thier noses and for barking. They were breed for both so why shouldnt they? Check out "Dr P's DOG TRAINING, THE NOSE KNOWS"
The history of the beagle is... well.... not well kept. Some belive that the Romans. ancient Greece, and England all had some form of beagle dog hunting for/with them. It is on record though that the King Arthur had a white hound breed, that may be related to the beagle of today. About the middle of the 18th century it is thought that some of the younger generation wanted to hunt rabbits instead of  fox's for a faster sport. And came up with two differant beagle types. One called the Southern Hound and the other called the North Country hound. In 1870 the U.S's beagle types were more like dachshunds or bassets.

But finally in 1888 the National Beagle Club was formed and held the first field trial. And some form of order was put into place for breeding what would become todays beagle.  For more information on Beagles check out the
BEAGLE CLUB OF AMERICA.
Beagles can be somewhat challanging to train. They do like thier noses and food. But the food part can come in handy for training. Food is forever! You can treat your dog when he/she does the command correctly. The library can help you get book on Beagles and training. Search engines also, I have some listed below.
Beagles and Basset's come in a variety of colors. White being the base color and black, red, and or brown splashed over the white. Basset Hounds are obviously in the hound group also.
The Basset hound has a gentle disposition also. Breed to get along well with other dogs and is many ways simular to the beagle in temperment and personality. Except the Basset is a little slower moving. Basset's are 14 - 15 inches tall. The ears are longer and the eyes droop. French Abbey of St. Hubert is given credit for the selective breeding from various other hounds to create the Basset.  And it is believed that George Washington owned of Basset hounds right here in the USA. Hunting was a great sport back int he 18-19 th centery. Besides the fact that it was the only way to eat. No local IGA  around the corner. You needed a good hound to sniff out the food you were hunting. Bassets are known for the nose's. Many people claim thier basset can find a three day old scent and track whom ever left the scent. It is said only the blood hound can track better than the basset.
