It is produced by burning fossil fuels ( e.g. fuel oil and coal ) . A large
proportion is produced by power stations and meyal smeters which burn sulphur-containing
coal , and also by the manufacturing industries which burn fuel oil .
Hazardous
to health: sulphur
dioxide is a colourless , toxic gas with a sharp , acidic odour . It causes
damage to respiratory system and increase in asthma attacks .
