    SPAM

SPAM. Not the canned luncheon meat, the pesky messages on the Internet. There are two types of SPAM that are a real problem for the net as a whole. Excessive Multi-Posting (EMP) is what is normally defined as SPAM. This is where a message is posted multiple times to a variety of newsgroups. Excessive Cross-Posting (ECP) is known as Velveeta. ECP is where a single message is posted to a lot of newsgroups by adding all the groups to the newsgroup: line of the headers. It's annoying, but not as much of a problem for the net. Unsolicited Commercial E-mail (UCE) is the latest bugbear. This is where unscrupulous and short-sighted businessmen collect a list of every single e-mail address they can find and send them all an e-mail advertising some product or service. It's like paper-based junk mail, but the difference is that YOU pay the bulk of the costs involved.
