How to become (a good) Otaku
The official guide to the art of being an Otaku

This guide has only one purpose... To make you a good Otaku... What is an Otaku? Well, it the Japanese equivalent for the "obsessed" or "freak" but it is commonly used in foreign countries to describe the one that like anime a lot. Many Otaku can be way too obsessed and that is not good. I call myself an Otaku with a funny meaning, as well as most of the anime fans. So, being an Otaku doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to exceed the limits. This guide can help you to start your occupation with anime.

First of all, you might want to know "What anime is". You can find a small FAQ by me here. Now, you probably want a place to start. The best you can do is actually watch an anime. If it isn't your first time let it be the first one as an anime fan. Of course, do not take anime too seriously. They are just nice hand-drawn movies. 

Decide which will your first anime be. I can propose based on categories you might like.

Adventure: Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto

Comedy: Love Hina, Excel Saga

Drama: Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Saikano (She, the ultimate weapon)

Games: Hikaru No Go

Sci-Fi: Ghost in the Shell

Mechas (Giant Robots): Neon Genesis Evangelion (Epic!!!!!)

There are many more anime (hundreds of them). You will check them on later. 

To watch an anime you might want to buy it on DVD ( www.amazon.com , www.animenation.com ) which might be hard for your pocket, especially if the series has many DVDs, download unlicensed anime via the net ( www.animesuki.com ) or trade with another Otaku by copying DVDs or CDs you already own.

Watch an anime, feel its story and... decide if you liked it or not. If you didn't, just try another. You can start conversation on anime in many forums of the net. Just google the word anime and search within the results. You will always come across a good forum to ask and be asked.

You should also watch the way Evangelions fight the Angels... You will need some techniques to beat others who make fun of your being an Otaku. It's common knowledge that not many people outside of Japan know about anime. Of course there has been a rise in the number of anime fans lately but they are still not enough. You will always come across someone who doesn't like anime. I say that you should try to show him one someday. He might become an Otaku too...

Now that you finally became an Otaku you might want to check this "Do" and "Do Not" list:

Do: Watch anime at least 5 hours per week, Have a Rei doll under your pillow, Eat ramen like Naruto does, Try to learn some basic Japanese, Visit anime sites on the net, Have many anime DVDs, Read Manga, Talk to others about anime, Hear Jpop in your car and download anime mp3s all day long

Don't: Watch anime over 5 hours per day, Get in fights about anime being not for kids, Try to talk to your parents about anime, Trust American anime distribution companies, Forget to have a bath because "Hikaru plays with Akira...", do not forget to bookmark my site ^^

...and above all... DO NOT LOSE YOUR LOVE FOR ANIME!!!
