.NET Framework environment

The .NET Framework is an environment for building, deploying and running distributed software applications. It has been designed to provide improved component support, language integration, application interoperability, simplified application development/deployment, improved reliability and much improved security.

Applications developed for .NET will run on platforms with the .NET runtime available which is normally Windows XP. Microsoft has provided several languages with compilers that can produce .NET applications:
Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET)
C#
Managed Extensions for Visual C++
JScript.NET
Other vendors provide .NET-compatable language compilers includ APL, COBOL, Eiffel, FORTRAN, Pascal, perl, Python, RPG, SmallTalk and even Java
