Father mine

Scott Douglas Davidson

Warnings: Light swearing. Geez... I think each chapter has a successively lower rating than the last one. By the end of this story I'll have out 'G'ed Barney! ...Ugh.

Disclaimer: Boy do I wish Bardock were mine. But if wishes were fishes... I'd still prefer Bardock. Bar-kun! Here Bar-kun!

Goten set the last Dragon ball down on the grass next to the others.

"That's great Goten!" Goku smiled at his teen son, who beamed back at him "Now we can get to meet your grandfather! Shenlong! Come grant my wishes!"

The great Dragon god Shenlong rose up as the sky darkened, and soon the granter of mortal's wishes was towering over the Saiyajin and his son, gazing down upon them in mild irritation.

"State your wish- Oh, it's you again. What do you want THIS time, Goku?" Dragon gods were not immune to feeling exasperated.

"I wish for my father to be brought back to life!" Goku called out. The Dragon's eyes flashed.

"It is done. What is your second wish?" the Dragon sighed. Knowing Goku, this might take a while.

"Uh... Where is he?" Goku looked around.

"Dad..." Goten asked cautiously, "Did your father die on earth?"

"Oh!" Goku laughed sheepishly "I forgot, he didn't! Shenlong, I wish my father to be brought here now!"

Again Shenlong's eyes flashed. A near-blinding light flashed on the ground in front of Goku and Goten, then faded. "It is done. I fare thee well." Shenlong disappeared, glad that for once, Goku hadn't kept him overly long. The Dragonballs lifted off the ground and shot out across the earth to be found again another time.

Goku and Goten stared at the figure gasping and heaving on the ground before them.

Bardock had been lounging around that day, in his usually contemplation of how much the universe hated him, when he had suddenly found himself engulfed in darkness, not even the glow from his halo lighting the area around him. He found himself suddenly needing to breath, but being unable to. He clutched at his throat, his eyes wide as he wondered if some smart aleck had found a way to dump him into some deep level of Hell as a cruel prank.

He was just about to pass out from oxygen deprivation when a blinding white light engulfed him, and he found himself kneeling on green grass under a dark sky. He gasped in the sweet air as quickly as he could, trying to stave off unconsciousness. He suddenly felt sick and coughed twice, then hurled onto the grass.

When he was breathing regularly again he looked around to see the sky had become a brilliant shade of blue while he was busy being sick, and two figures stood nearby, staring at him with wide eyes.

A faint buzzing lit up in the back of his skull, and he stared at the larger of the two people. "Kakarotto?" he asked cautiously before collapsing on the grass and passing out.

Goku was startled to say the least at the sudden rush of emotions that welled up in him at the sight of the Saiyajin-body-armor-clad man before him. As he watched his father cough and get sick on the grass he heard his son muttering next to him; "That's my grandfather?"

"Kakarotto?" the man locked eyes with Goku, looking very lost, then collapsed to the ground unconscious.

"Whoa! Are you alright?" Goku rushed to his father's side, knowing the man was far from 'all right'. He picked his father up and turned him over to look into his face, which still had that odd expression of shock on it that the man had had when he'd first laid eyes on Goku.

"Dad, where are we going to take him?" Goten knew that Goku couldn't just go home looking like he was carrying his clone in his arms, nor could he go to Capsule Corp, where Vegeta would likely throw a hissy-fit about 'Kakarotto' resurrecting Saiyajin without the prince deciding who to bring back. Goku's father was likely not on the list.

"K-Ka-karot-to?" Goku's father murmured weakly, his eyes opening slightly to peer up at the man carrying him.

"Hai." Goku nodded, "That's me."

"But dad, I thought you hated your Saiyajin name." Goten looked oddly at his father.

"Ka-karotto..." Bardock struggled to focus on his son's face, but he was still dizzy and couldn't quite get his eyes to focus...

"What's your name, father?" Goku asked the Saiyajin lying in his arms.

"My na-ame...? Bardock..."

"Well, I suppose we'd better get you somewhere you can rest, father." Goku smiled down at Bardock and shifted his grip slightly so he could lift his fingers to his forehead to use Instant Transmission.

"Hey! Don't forget me!" Goten leaped forward and clung to his father as they disappeared.

They reappeared in front of a very startled Vegeta, in the middle of Bulma's living room.

"Damn it!" Vegeta threw the soda can he had just finished at Goku's head. It bounced off and clattered to the floor. "I have told you time and time again; don't use that damned technique in this house!" Vegeta bellowed the last bit in Goku's face.

"Gomen Vegeta, but I was hoping Bulma could look my father over and make sure he's alright." Goku answered, holding up the half-conscious Saiyajin as evidence.

"Ou-ouji-sama?" Bardock blinked blearily at the stunned Saiyajin.

"Where the hell did he come from?!" Vegeta grabbed Goku by the collar and pulled him close "If you're playing some sort of trick on me I'll-"

"No, no!" Goku's eyes shone pleadingly as he protested "I wished my father back today and I forgot to wish him to the Earth check-in station first and he was sick in the grass when he appeared and I just wanted to make sure he was alright!"

Vegeta released Goku's collar and turned around. "If I find out that you're lying..." and he strode out of the room.

"What's his royal pain-in-the-ass yelling about now?" Bulma asked, having just walking into the room.

"Oh, he was mad because I teleported in and he thinks I might be lying about wishing my father back to life." Goku explained. Bulma blinked. Then she saw the man in Goku's arms.

"That looks like Turles!" she exclaimed.

"No, no!" Goku shook his head "It's my father, Bardock. I wished him back to life because Goten wanted to know what his grandfather was like. He got sick when I wished him back though, and then he passed out. I wanted you to make sure he was ok."

"Oh." Bulma said weakly, then shook her head "Well, I guess we'd better do a check-up on him then. Let's take him down to the medical room." Bulma started off down the hall, and Goku shrugged slightly and followed her.

"Who...?" Bardock asked.

"That's Bulma. She's a good friend of mine. She'll have you feeling better in no time!" Goku assured his father.

Bardock didn't hear Goku's answer, he'd passed out.

--- --- ---

"Well," Bulma exclaimed after a battery of tests she had preformed on the hapless, unconscious, resurrected Saiyajin, "I think he's just a little oxygen deprived. You said you'd wished him alive before wishing him the Earth's check-in station?"

Goku nodded.

"Well, since he died on Vegeta-sei, which isn't there anymore, and when someone's wished back they come back to the place they'd died at, he would have come back to life in the middle of space! It's a good thing you wished him to Earth when you did or he might have started to get brain damage from the lack of oxygen."

"Oh, that would be bad." Goku frowned.

"Very bad." Bulma agreed.

Bardock opened his eyes. "Kakarotto?"

"Hi father!" Goku smiled at the Saiyajin lying on the examination table.

"Hn?" Bardock tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness and nausea rolled over him. He fought it back and carefully pulled himself to a sitting position.

"Hi there." Bulma greeted him cautiously.

"Son, did you die?" Bardock looked over at Goku.

"No, but you're alive again. I had Shenlong bring you back to life!" Goku grinned like a child that had just learned to ride a bike for the first time.

Bardock decided to question him about who this 'Shenlong' was later. But for now...

"I'm alive again?" Bardock found new energy flowing through his limbs. He encouraged it to spread with a liberal use of ki, and slowly flexed a few muscles in test.

"Yep, alive and healthy!" Goku was still grinning. Bardock gave him an odd look, then shook his head.

"And you're responsible for that?" Bardock asked.

Goku nodded. "Yeah, I gathered the Dragonballs up with my son and we-" Bardock held up a silencing hand.

"Thank you Kakarotto, son." Bardock smiled back at Goku, who felt a sudden warm feeling growing in his stomach. It felt like when he ate Chi-chi's chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven on a cool day. He sniffed experimentally and he did smell a faint chocolaty smell whisping past his nostrils...

"No need to thank me! I always wanted to know what my father was like! Well, after Chi-chi explained to me about family anyway." Goku rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

Bulma found herself chuckling at that.
