| Book Review: On the Road Ned This is actually set in the late 40s but was published and caused a stir in the early 50s. Basically it's the story of Sal Paradise, a twentysomething who's broke and pretty directionless. He decided to spend a summer road tripping across America, surviving on odd jobs and friends. He teams up with Dean Moriarty who's dreamy and into having long talks about random things which go on all night. This book inspired loads of 50s teens to go off on their own little trips in search of their real selves and kinda of drugs, sex and jazz (not quite rock and roll) adventures this lot have. Actually Sal isn't overly sexed or a junkie, but joins in with the fun his mates have, and sponges off his aunt for basically the |

| whole book. He originally plans to go home in autumn and plans to get a job on the ships, but Dean finds him and he ends up going back and forth searching for something he doesn't quite know. This book is as fresh to a teen today as when it was written, except that the characters are always 'digging' things and saying 'man!' for no reason. It's still inspirational, and caused a massive wave of roadtrips because teens then were just as unsettled as we are today, this book really tapped into that. The writing's great, the characters are believebly because this is pretty much an autobiographical account. For some holiday reading or escapism this is great as it's not too heavy or boring, and yet doesn't let you rot you mind with predictable plotlines. I give it 4 out of 5 |
