| How to Throw a 50s Party Ned Whats better than dressing up and acting like complete fools? Me and my mates love doing just that, so last summer we had a 50s themed party. Its probably the best kinda of theme you can have for a gathering because you theme costumes, music, food, drinks and films. The Clothes: Basically just copy looks from films. Dressing up as a Pink Lady or Sandy from Grease is a good idea, remember the neck scarves and pointy stilettos (and maybe even a Marilyn wig?). The blokes should think about plenty of hair gel (comb it over, itll look stupid but youll just have to hope everyone else looks worse) and black leather jackets and get an easy ride with regards to footwear and trousers because they could just wear black for both. Dont even think about going in an Elvis costume! The Music: The Grease soundtrack is great for some unashamed dancing when youre all a little tipsy! Other than that stick on some Elvis and youll be well away. You could try to do a little retro dancing, back then the dancing was either slow and elegant or fast and dangerous, with little in between. For some ideas go here for slow: http://www.fiftiesweb.com/slow.htm and here for fast: http://www.fiftiesweb. com/fast.htm The Food: Diner food is a must for a 50s party so cook up some burgers and hotdogs. Fries never go amiss either. The Drinks: Obviously brightly coloured sugary alcohol is always good to have around, but so are milkshakes diner stylee. You could always mix lemonade with ice cream to make an ice cream sundae too. Dont forget little cocktail umbrellas if youre going to try some bright cocktails too. Films: Grease is always fun to watch, but you could always go for some classic 50s films instead. Rebel Without a Cause was a massive hit with 50s teens starring James Dean, and Some Like It Hot is a comedy with Marilyn Monroe in which is worth watching. The 50s was the era when the term teenager was coined, and for the first time they had movies, music and stars targeted at them. They lapped it up and the behaviour which has now become associated with our age group was born. So live it up like a teenager of the past and enjoy yourself! |
