The Academy Awards
Tomety

For the past 76 years an American institute has awarded actors, filmmakers, makeup artists, cartoonists and many more people in similar professions. Their aim is to signify the best of the best, and award them with a 13.5-inch gold plated statue.
MGMs chief art director Cedric Gibbons designed the Oscar statuette back in 1928. Since the 1st annual Academy Awards ceremony, variations of the golden man have been given out. This has included one large and seven small Oscars awarded to Walt Disney for their first feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a wooden Oscar with a moveable mouth was presented to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and during the war, plaster
moulds were given out. (These were then substituted for gold plated ones after).
The first Oscars ceremony was held in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and tickets cost $10, and it wasnt till 1953 that the ceremony was filmed for TV viewers. Since then, the annual Academy Awards are live for our private enjoyment.
Legendary actress Meryl Streep holds the title for most Oscar nominations, as she been nominated a whopping 14 times. The nominations are as follows
Best Supporting Actress nomination:
The Deer Hunter (1978), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Adaptation (2002) and The Hours (2003)
Best Actress Nominations: The French Lieutenants Woman (1981), Sophies Choice (1982), Silkwood (1983), Out Of Africa (1985), Ironweed (1987), A Cry in the Dark (1988), Postcards from the Edge (1990),
The Bridges Of Madison County (1995),
One True Thing (1998) and Music of the Heart (1999)
Among the list of presenters are Whoopie Goldberg, Steve Martin and Billy Crystal. Its obviously extremely demanding, and Im guessing a lot of tantrums and pant wetting goes on in the wings. Most recent to win an Oscar was Nicole Kidman for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, and perhaps the most recent memorable expectance speeches are from Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry, both bursting into tears while clasping the golden man.
The next Academy Award show is in February 2004, and with big releases like Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings, its gonna be tough to decide who takes home the Oscar for Best Picture. In recent years big winners have been Chicago, Titanic, In the Bedroom and Monsters Ball.
I hope you all watch the live coverage like I do, I know its on at some unsightly hours but its way better to see it firsthand, and I hope things can get back to normal after last years dulling down, due to the break out of war
