Book/Film Review: Ocean's Eleven
Tomety

A remake of a classic Rat- Pack movie heading for disaster I hear you say, but no! Both the book and the DVD are superb!
Written by Dewey Gram, Oceans 11 follows 11 men brought together to undertake the biggest casino robbery in history. The men are gathered by recently released Danny Ocean and old friend Rusty. As they recruit their men it becomes clear that Danny has an alternate reason for such a big job, he wants to win Tess, his Ex-wife back (She just happens to be dating the guy all three casinos belong too!)
The book is brilliantly written and every character has a reason to be in the book, unlike some Ive read. At points of tension and anxiety the writing reflects these emotions, which entices you to read on. I finished the book in a few hours, giving me time to watch the DVD- remake for the first time with all the relevant facts and feelings the characters would be undertaking at certain points within the movie.

The DVD: I also bought the DVD in the sale for 6.99 and this prompted me to start reading the book.
In the role of Danny Ocean is George Clooney (Tvs ER, Batman and Robin), Julia Roberts (Mona Lisa Smile, The Mexican) as Tess and Brad Pitt (The Mexican, Fight Club) as Rusty. Theyve also managed to bring in Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and Bernie Mac!
Although most of the actors fit the guidelines the book set for their characters perfectly, I wasnt expecting Bernie Mac as the dodgy black- jack dealer. Plus Elliot Gould and Casey Affleck were a bit of a surprise too.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the movie keeps to the book perfectly, and the techniques and transitions used remind me of galaxy chocolate mixed with Charlies Angels. Some of the scenes are fantastic and using coffee soaked images and instrumental orchestra when Tess leaves is brilliant both for the eyes and ears.
The whole movie feels, and is shot like one long Gillette Razor advert, with modern scenery and cool classy colours. I havent seen the original, and like the recent remake of the classic Italian Job, Im guessing its got the goods, but in a vintage package.
All the leads are up to scratch, making this movie one of the finest book to screen adaptations you could wish for.

I give Oceans 11, Book and DVD, 4 out of 5 demented chickens
