| As a huge fan of Horror in general, my collection wouldnt be complete without the phenomenal 1978 movie Halloween, and neither will yours. Halloween or The Babysitter murders- as it was originally titled was created by Horror genius John Carpenter. John has also had success with movies such as The Thing and The Fog, ring any bells? Much like the Friday the 13th movies, Halloween has spawned sequel after sequel, and notched up a story line that is still continuing today, and Halloween 9 is well on the way to the cinemas. On Halloween night 1963, a young boy named Michael brutally murdered his older sister Judith with a large kitchen knife. His familys life would never be the same again! Michael was locked away in a sanitarium where he stayed for 15 years, under the care of Dr Sam Loomis, (Donald Pleasance). But on the eve of Halloween 1978, 21 year old Michael escapes and continues his reign of terror on his sleepy home town of Haddonfield. Laurie (Jamie lee Curtis) was raised (un- be- known to her) by foster parents, and while babysitting for a neighbour, her world is turned up side down by the home coming of her demonic brother. Halloween 2 continues where the original left of. Same night, same chase and same killer. After being caught in an explosion Michael is thought to have perished but we dont find out untill Halloween 4 what has really happened! Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, takes a break from the Michael Vs Laurie story, and follows a new plot. (This new plot has never been picked up since!). A small town called Santa Mira is developing a Halloween mask that has been cursed by an Irishman who received his powers when he stole a stone from Stonehenge, (complicated, I know) its then a frantic rush to stop the lethal masks being sold to the kids of America. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, reveal to us that Laurie has died in a car crash, but not before giving birth to a daughter Jamie (Danielle Harris). After escaping from an ambulance while on transfer to another hospital, Michael returns to Haddonfield and picks up where he left of, exactly 10 years ago, on Halloween 1988. Jamie (I wonder where they got that name from!) is now the new target of her psychotic Uncle. But as the story draws to a close, a mystery man in black rescues Michael and nurses him back to health. Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. Its now 1994 and this instalment reveals the identity of the M.I.B who has actually captured Jamie and impregnated her (a clever way to keep the saga going). But early on in the movie Jamie is killed by her uncle, who is now after her baby son, and a new family that have moved into the old home of the Myers family. Michael is also reunited with Tommy Doyle (Paul Rudd) (the kid Laurie baby-sat for in the original movie) and along with Kara Strode (Marianne Hagan) (a relative of Lauries) they discover that Michael was cursed with thorn. This convinced him to wipe out his entire family, and Jamies baby is next in line! Sadly, this is the last we see of the brilliant Donald Pleasance, and both Halloween 6 and Halloween H20 are dedicated to his work. Its also the last we see of Kara and Tommy, whom Im guessing will appear in the future having raised the baby as their own. Now to Halloween H20, (by far my favourite) and its 1998, 20 years since the original murders and Laurie is back!It turns out that she faked her death to avoid her unstoppable brother and she is now the headmistress of a secluded school in California. Laurie (now known as Kerri Tate) and son John (Josh Hartnett) are still living in fear of the day when Michael returns. But this time shes stronger and has too much to lose. Along with Johns girlfriend Molly (Michelle Williams) and caretaker Ronnie (Ll Cool J) Michael will not know whats hit him. Halloween: Resurrection brings a supposedly dead Michael back to life, and the Michael Vs Laurie story comes to a climactic end. (But after reading articles on the net, many believe Laurie will return in the future!) Michael returns to Haddonfield where competition winners are spending a night in his childhood home. Freddie Harris (Busta Rhymes) and Nora Winston (Tyra Banks) are the co-hosts of -Dangertainment-, which will broadcast the show over the Internet. As you can guess Michael isnt one to miss a party, and succeeds in killing off most of the cast. (Although most of the movies are a good watch, for my opinion of Halloween: Resurrection, see the review I wrote for Octobers edition of P.V) Theres already been talk of Halloween 9, but as yet no story attached to it. I seriously hope John and Ronnie make a come back, with Laurie, as I feel she is the only character worthy of killing Michael for good! I seriously recommend you see all the Halloween movies as each one poses something different. They are all available on DVD box-sets and VHS. |
