For Phebe and her husband, life was sunshine and candycorn. Their relationship was good, their child was healthy, and what more could they really want? They weren't going to top any rich lists, but their family wasn't missing meals or worrying about having the utilities turned off. There were problems. Nothing Phebe would want to talk about, but they were in the past now. All water under the bridge. She didn't think anything of it when she left her daughter in the waiting room with the other kids to have her teeth checked. She felt even better when she found out that there was nothing wrong with her teeth. Not perfect, but close enough so she didn't have to have any work done. She could celebrate something like that. All thoughts of celebration evaporated when she went into the waiting room and her daughter was gone. Like that. The other kids were still there, the nurse still watching, everything in place except her daughter wasn't playing the video games or looking at magazines or playing games with any of the other kids or anywhere. She wasn't in the bathroom or down the hall or anywhere. She wasn't waiting by the car or in the parkinglot or anywhere that Phebe could find. The nurse hadn't noticed her daughter leaving. How could that be? She called her husband and together they searched every inch of the building. Others helped, the cops were called, her daughter vanished. When they got home, there was a package waiting. Inside, a small ear with an earring just like the one Phebe's daughter was wearing sat on blood soaked cotton. Over the next week, other parts showed up one at a time. The other ear, fingers, toes, small slips of skin. Phebe was beyond tears and beyond pain. She was at the point where she didn't think she would ever see her daughter alive again. She would just keep getting parts and parts until she could put her daughter back together agian, but she wouldn't be alive. ??? big joke ??? |
