Places I Never Meant To Be by Judy Blume This book is about censored authors and works. In the beginning Judy Blume's personal essay will really make you think about what it means to be a censored artist. As I read the essay I realized that all the time I am forced to censor myself....afraid of what people will think of me. I was against censorship before, because it effected me as a reader, but now i understand how it effects writers as well. If you are against censorship, show your support by reading this book. The uncensored stories and the personal essay's by all the featured writer will make you really think about the things that the censors are really "protecting" you from.
Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger Now this was the story to end all stories. This is a different kind of love story, a very different kind of love story. This is the story of John a totally ambiguious teenage boy who befriends Marisol, a culturally advanced lesbian; both zine writers. If you've ever experianced hard love then this story will grab at your very soul. It will make you laugh but it will make you cry more often than not. This poignant novel, deticated to everyone whose first love was a hard love, will soon become one of your favorites...after you get over the shock
Slut!: Growing Up Female With A Bad Reputation By: Leora Tanenbaum "Slut! is a bracing corrective for any young woman who finds herself at the marcy of the double standard." - Susan Faludi The topic of this book is slut-bashing. From the first few pages you realize that Slut is one of the most damaging words for a female...along with a long list of substitute words. Now I personally have labeled girls as sluts. But after reading this book I suddenly found myself being enlightened. I'm not going to explain the book to you, but I have to say, if the words slut, bitch, whore, or ho have ever passed your lips you have to read this book. I will have to warn you though that it isn't the kind of book you can read straight through, it's not a story, rather a collection of personal narratives by girls who have been at one time or another called a Slut!
