I am writing a novel about my family and their experiences during World War II in Malta. I am very interested in learning anything and everything I can about the statue that is referred to as "Malta." During parish feasts, the statue is raised up and the carriers run her through the streets. Since she is an angel, it appears that she is flying. The image is of an angel warrior who pro ably stood up against the Turks during the first great siege at the time of the Crusades. Does anyone know the history behind this statue and the traditions associated with it? I'd be grateful for any responses. John Mifsud Seattle, WA, USA

Went to Malta to see the millennium in and I have to admit, the country impressed me. It was great to get out in the "country" to see the cart ruts and the tombs - my own preference is for sledges, but I'd like to know more about the presumed Bronze Age population numbers. It's a lovely, archaeologically rich country, but it's also a place where graciousness is seemingly in short supply.

I miss Malta! I lived there from 19779 to 1983. My family moved there from Texas during the oil boom. Maltese people are very gracious. The island is beautiful. I lived in Rabat, on Tal-Virtu. From our street you could practically see the whole island. We used to drive to Dingli to watch thunderstorms over the sea from the cliffs. That was always an incredible sight. One day I would love to bring my daughter. She is half Maltese and really knows nothing about the place. Some day.

I plan to go to Malta to see some of the archeological items of interest in the fall. I am interested in the "ruts". If I had a cart whose wheels matched the width of the ruts, I would not drive in the ruts, I would straddle a rut and drive on the surf ce. Other like minded people would do likewise and the ruts would never get so deep. There are ruts that look like these at Ephesus and at Hadrians Gate in Southern Turkey but they are not this deep.

My parents were born in Malta - Dad in Sliema,1922, and Mum in Floriana,1927 - migrating to Australia in 1954, where I was born in Melbourne, 1955. As far as we know we were the only Cosaitis family in Malta and are the only family of that name in Austral a. My great grandfather came to Malta from Greece. It is believed the surname was originally spelt "Kozaitis", emanating from Pontus in Ancient Greece, and was changed to conform to the Maltese alphabet. My grandfather was a chef who served in the British Navy, dying in action in 1939. My father served as a sergeant-major in the British Army in defence of a much besieged Malta, from 1939-1945. I am a secondary school teacher of psychology, English and history in a Victorian country college. I have not been to Malta yet.I would appreciate any information you could provide which may shed light on the origin of our family name.Thankyou.
