Daddy
Daddy
Daddy
Daddy

In childhood he was stricken with polio
which left him crippled for life
He was always aided by crutches or cane, and
it seemed he would always have strife.

With his body so frail and mostly in pain
He could hardly ever go to school
So at home he was taught the three basic "R"s
and he lived by the Golden Rule

But his mind was eager, hungry and bright
and he fed it by reading books
And as a young man he was truly blessed
with handsome "Clark Gable" looks.

He worked hard at anything he could
and sometimes the hours were long.
Though limited he was, he never gave up
for honest work seemed to make him strong.

There were times he got looks of pity,
some with a tear in their eye.
But he would just smile and go on his way
Proudly holding his head high.

He may have been lacking in stature
But his ability he was never in doubt
He would always provide for his family
and never need to take a handout.
Daddy

He was always helping his fellowman
"others less fortunate" he would say.
No awards was he given, but he didn't mind
For it just wasn't his way.

He was no politician, he gave no great speeches
But what wonderful stories he could tell
and no matter how bad things seemed to get
He always got up when he fell.

He could never be in Olympic games
For you see he could not run
and tennis or golf he could never play
so trophies he never won.

He was never a soldier hero
no medals did he wear
But he loved his country just as much
and tried to do his share.

A real champion was this man with a cane
He gave of himself so unselfishly
His life he devoted to God, family and friends
and a champion he will always be.
ODE TO MY FATHER

A REAL CHAMPION
This poem describes the kind of man my father was.  He was my best friend, and a friend to everyone he knew.  He had health problems from the time he was one year old, and he could have easily given up and taken charity, welfare, or disability compensation.  He never felt he had to do that and always had a job and provided for us.  My mother never had to work while we were growing up.  I know my father is in Heaven watching over us.
