All
We Ever Wanted
All we ever wanted was everything
All we ever got was tears
Bloodshot eyes and bitter smiles
We scatter our precious prayers
To the wind, to the faces
As we sink deeper in the ashes.
The more we cry, the more our ashes
Turn to mud and everything
Gets darker with our tears
Who could fathom those hidden smiles,
Those secret dreams? Breathe a prayer
Like a razor slides. The memories show in our faces.
New hopes like shining faces
Don't know they'll sleep in ashes
They wanted to know everything
Those ashes sting and bring on tears,
Tears may bring smiles
But smiles do fade from broken prayers.
O gentlemen, swallow your prayers
You know those lonely faces
Were born in ashes, will die in ashes
Because they wanted everything
But never wanted tears
Those tears sour their sweet smiles.
Those languid liquid smiles
Show not in our prayers
But like infected gashes in our faces,
Which is all we have. The ashes
We hide and everything
Underneath those grainy tears.
Salty crystal tears
We give birth to wash us clean. Those smiles
We dream for in our prayers
Never cut through our faces
Once again our muddy ashes
Are darkening and seeping into everything.
"All we ever wanted was everything,"
And through our tears and vacant smiles
We face the ashes of our prayers.
