Personal statement
Born in 1961 in a small Shropshire market town, I was soon scattered to the corners
of the UK with my parents when my father joined the RAF. My love of book outweighed
my poor reading skills and I soon learned to ignore the words that I couldn't see - an
interesting way to overcome a mild dyslexia no one bothered to tell me about.
In 1972 I was sent to boarding school, and adolescence triggered a wave of prolific
inept angst rhyme. At the same time I dabbled in comic verse which proved to be
more effective and entertaining - I once wrote a poem about the nutritional properties
of cellulose which I'm still rather fond of.
After leaving school in 1980 I spend a year in Liverpool trying to study Biochemistry.
However, instead of working I spent most of my time with a tragic girl who was to
influence my writing, my art and my life. It was at this time that I wrote most of what
I consider to be my best work.
Between 1984 and 1997 I stopped writing, not all together, but I never really wrote
anything of significance or interest, I spent most of the time concentrating on art and
music, two other keen interests in my life.
In 1996 I discovered the Internet and joined a cinema mailing list. It was at this time
I started writing film reviews, although they were less "reviews" and more like film
inspired poems. I developed a "you are there" style, rather then write a comment or
synopsis of the film I adopted the total immersion approach, evoking the imagery
and emotion of the film through language. It was at this time that another writer
suggested I should join a proper writers list.
I joined Sasha Stone's "The Writers Group" in 1997 and started looking over my old
work and playing with words again. Since then I have started my own list "Surreal"
which I predominantly use for word games, and developed a web page containing
most of the poetry from the 1984 period called "Pages from a Forgotten Notebook"

Oh and I live by the sea.
10 Steps to Hell
When I find myself unable to speak
Except in your presence,
And am unable to think
In your absence,
When the clocks spin faster
When Iım with you,
Yet crawl
When we are apart,
When my hands are cold
Without your touch,
And my eyes are blind
Without your smile,
When it seems that you are away from me
Far too long,
And I begin to drink too much
Too often,
When I am enveloped
In irrational anger,
When I break down
And cry,
Then I know
The day is over,
And I must prepare
For that long sleep
Once more.
