Wee flies in their eyes

Walking Down South in July White Christmas

I tramped down to the lough where the fish jump high
Through a different world with wee flies in their eyes.
I rolled back in a hollow by a big fallen tree
Closed my eyes to the sun and forgot about me.

I forgot about you in your media world,
All you whitewashed tombs and political herds
Who mill about lordly to sell us the facts
While peddling opinions you learned from the pack

Past my best in the quiet, every thought bled away
To the murmuring wash in the heat of the day.
Remembering nothing, I could see nothing more,
For my future and past fell down dead on the shore.

They fell off me like mud from my boots in the sun,
For time has no meaning when the wanderings done.
I screwed down my old cap and laughed into the sky,
Risen free like the fish with wee flies in their eyes.
