The L o c k e d Dream

through the clutches of time
i slip behind
the blindness overtakes the
seemingly perfect
surroundings

a melody plays
softly at first
then with increasing
pace
drumming louder and louder
and i spin

through the filmy haze
i see a shadow
of what?
me. who i am. who i am yet to be?
the figure approaches
with slow, gentle steps

the child-like grace amazes me
the simplicity, the loving features
this creature is not from my world

she extends her hand
and offers me a box
carved, oddly shaped
and l o c k e d

"well what is in this l o c k e d box?" i inquire
she looks up through perfect lashes and i marvel
at the transient blue of her eyes
"well, its your heart." she replies matter-of-factly

gingerly, i take this box
it's  odd shape, carved...and of course
l o c k e d

i clutch it to my chest and sigh
"keep ahold of your heart, but don't let the fear overtake."
the young girl says wisely.
"fear will overshadow even the greatest of loves."
i nod dumbly at the apparition
as she turns and
disappears

i awake, and find

      myself clutching
