Dixie Fight Song
BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER

Remembering back to boot camp,
The Sergeant had taught that hate
Was a vital eelment of the bayonet drill.
"Hate the enemy; despise him," he'd say.
"There be no room for compassion
Or neutrality in this most personal
Form of modern combat.
A single moment's hesitation could be fatal.
Scream! Thrust! Tear!"
The Sergeant could conjure no other
Emotion than numbing terror.
When the enemy was close enough,
I screamed and lunged.
The scream was closer to desperation than hate;
But the lunge was effective enough.
A sea of red spread across his topcoat.
I twisted the bayonet and my brother
Collapsed across me, pinning me to the ground.
I choked under the weight of his body
And  felt his warm blood
Soaking into my own uniform.
My face was pressed into his like a lover's.
I tried to push him away and found
Myself staring into his eyes.
He was young, no older than I.
Not a hardened warrior at all, but a boy!
A few hairs sketched a tentative
Moustache across his lip.
He stared at me with bewilderment.
His mouth opened as if to say something,
But all that escaped his lips was a drawn-out sigh.
Then his eyes filmed over and stared not at me,
But off into a distance beyond human capacity.
Suddenly, the man's bowel and bladder relaxed.
The thought of it made me gag.
This time I did not hold back and the sour liquid
Drained into the earthen floor of the trench.
