A Wintery Death
Date of Submission:  August 7, 2002
A silhouette stands between two black lines of
Tire tracks slashed across a snowy road;
A breath mingles with the falling snow,
Tinted silver by a full Moon and car headlights.
A set of eyes wander over the gouges in the drifts
Down to the metal heap in the icy creek.
Water gurgles as it flows through the wreak,
Washing away crimson stains squeezed
From a living body.
Around the hillside, the charcoal shadows
Of pine trees rustle as if in acknowledgement.
The woman suppresses a shiver wanting
To ripple down her spine.
Out of the darkness, heavy boots crunch on
Snow and gravel following flashlight beams
Through the cold and thick night.
An array of colored bubbles flash on and off
Adding brilliance to this dreary winter sight.
