THE WINCHESTER MANSION
In 1884,a wealthy widow named Sarah L. Winchester began a construction project that was so massive it would consume the lives of carpenters and craftsmen until her death 38 years later.

What started as an eight room farm house soon beacame a house consisting of 160 rooms, equiped with modern heating and sewer systems, gas lights that can be activated by a button, three working elevators and 47 fireplaces.

Why such a massive house for a widowed woman? Sarah had visited a psychic who told her the spirits of all the animals and people who had been murdered by the Winchester rifle would soon avenge their deaths against her. The only way to prevent this from happening, the psychic said, would be by building the spirits a grand home.

Sarah immediatley moved to sunny California and purchased an 8 room farmhouse. Construction was soon underway. It is said that every night Sarah would retire to her "seance room" to speak with the ghost about their building plans.

The house has many confusing out of place oddities. Stairs that lead to the ceiling, doors that open to nowhere, windows into other rooms. Sarah firmly believed the ghost were constructing her mansion. And she felt that as long as the construction continued, they would not haunt her.
