Vanishing Act

Down at the river
where we dock our boat,
I sit on the grass
and watch dragonflies float.
I think they must be
more dragon than fly.
I never can catch one,
despite how I try.
I reach out for one,
but when my hand nears
he swoops, and he darts
then he flat disappears!
Don't Look

A lizard lounged on a sunny rock,
enjoying the summer day.
A garter snake came and scolded him
for sleeping his life away.
"I hate to see you wasting time,"
the angry reptile said.
The lizard shrugged goodnaturedly
and answered, "Turn your head.".
The Crawfish

A crawfish looks like
a mini-lobster.
He is as mean
as any old mobster.
He'll pinch anything
if he gets half a try.
His pinch is so hard
it can make you cry.
But should we blame him? No.
This is why not--
he knows that we want
to pop him in a pot.
Visitor

A junebug is on my screendoor
on this hot summer night.
He must've been attracted by
the glow of my kitchen light.
We visit for a moment,
but he hasn't much to say,
and when my dog barks at him
my small guest flies away.
The Contortionist

Each time my cat cleans himself
I expect disaster.
He puts his leg behind his ear
just like a yoga master.
I'm afraid that one fine day
he'll run out of luck,
and, bent up like a pretzel,
he'll find that he is stuck.
