War Within
By Larry Hart
As I wonder who I am Red Man or White a war within me rages. When I think of myself as Red I remember what Whites have said the only good indian is Dead...The war within rages. When I remember that I am Cherokee a once proud warrior race I recall the many times Whites have caused my people to lose Face... Again the war within. As I recall that I am White I relive the battles won By the White man's gun And the Red Man dying were they fight. Again the war within. When I think of the Cherokee I think of The Trail of Tears And those who died on this terrable flight. When I think of the Whites I think of a Vail of Tears Flowing like a river over this land they stole from Native hands. The war within. Know who you are say the Cherokee sages And have a brave heart...But how can I know Who I am while this war within rages.
