Punishment

No one shall compare me to a summer’s day.

It is destined that love will not come my way.

This is my sentence for unspeakable crimes.

I accept this judgment—I am doing my time.

But every year when the breeze becomes warm—

When the earth comes alive and the honey bees swarm—

My heart is saddened—I think of what I’ve lost.

This punishment has come at too great of a cost.
