| Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow- vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost Lenore- For the rare and radiand maiden whom the angels name Lenore- Nameless here forevermore. |

| Stanza 2 is mostly about the speaker trying to forget about Lenore, his lost angel. He was trying to forget her by reading deep into a book to get her out of his mind for a while. He couldn't stop thinking about her so he "eagerly wished the morrow", which means he wanted to fall asleep in order to ease him from the pains in his heart. He plainly states the setting of this story in this paragraph when he says "it was in the bleak December". He states in stanza 1 that he is also in a small chamber, or his house, at midnight. |
