Independence Day has new meaning for me,
And I discovered a newfound pride.
When years ago the Traveling Vietnam Wall,
Made its way to my countryside.

I volunteered immediately,
When I heard the news of its coming.
To do my part as a soldier's wife,
I got on the phone and started bumming.

I got donations of everything,
From doughnuts to beautiful flowers.
I was going to do my part,
I didn't care about the long hours..

Finally the day arrived,
When the big trucks came rolling in.
With love and care the Wall was erected,
And now the visits would begin.

I helped with the rubbings,
I held loved ones close and wept as well.
I saw the affects of what war could do,
The lost sons & daughters, forever on The Wall they dwell.

I saw men in wheelchairs and on crutches too,
I saw mothers and grandmothers cry out loud
People staring back at their reflections on the Wall,
Our Vets still in their uniforms that did us proud.

I realized something very significant during all of this,
Something that remains with me today.
Many men may have left Vietnam
But Vietnam found a place in their soul to stay.

So I am humbled today and more than proud,
To pay homage to the ones that fought and died.
To the ones that made it back, but yet,
Left so much of themselves on the other side.

I looked into their eyes that day,
As they saluted Old Glory as she went by.
They still honored her with the same respect,
As any good soldier with a tear in his eye.

To all our Vets..To all our Soldiers..
We honor you and the supreme price you paid...
Thank You will never suffice.
