***sigh***
well, my computer is back up and running...
last thursday, i received some parts in the mail i'd ordered... new motherboard, ahtlon 1ghz, some fans, and some ram... installed it all, powered up, windows found all the new stuff and installed drivers... then decided to take some time off.
well, that was a bummer.
i spent friday and saturday trying to find someone with a full install windows 98 cd... to no avail... my brother had one. that's what i originally got the old computer up and running with. but we haven't been able to find it. i'm 99.99% sure i ain't got it... and we only found an upgrade cd at my in-laws... so no luck.
sunday was easter.
monday i went into work and got toally bummed out about joey ramone's death... decided "fuck it" and took off early... went to compusa and bought a shiny new hard drive and a full install version of windows me... got home, installed the drive and os, loaded all the drivers, installed office and some other software, then i tried to get my nic card and dsl up and running... and my new configuration told me in no uncertain terms to fuck off.
i've spent the past couple days in irq and windows conflict HELL... last night, i gave up and decided i'd give the big boys up at microsoft a call in the morning... woke up this morning, called the microsofties, and was told to try everything that i had already tried... it did help though... not the microsofties themselves, but rather having someone on the phone, and having them have internet access... the guy sounded like he knew less than i did, and probably did... but he had access... he went to the kingston website and via phone i directed him around until we found my nic card and he read off to me all the different solutions... pausing a couple times to tell me frankly that he was into unknown territory now...
luckily, one of us knew what we were doing, and it dawned on me to check what resources were using what irq settings... and lo and behold, there was the problem sitting there fat and ugly and laughing in my face... a scsi controller using the same irq as my nic card... a scsi controller? but wait. i have not a scsi card nor drive... DIE FOUL BEAST!
and with a few clicks i had disabled the damned device, reinstalled my nic card drivers for the Nth time, and rebooted... SUCCESSFULLY... for the first time since this whole stinkin' debacle began...
and now i sit here... babbling on like some crazy geek fool... probably looking quite the part in nothing but shorts and a tee shirt, my hair frizzy and unkempt, my eyes dazed and still not completely awake... but i could care less.
my computer is ressurected... and performing better than ever... buffed up and ready to take on the world... or at least for now, the world wide web...
god i'm cheesy... not to mention dangerously dependent on this hunk of metal and plastic next to me... but sadly, i could care less.
