You
remember
that
my
great
vision
came
to
me
when
I
was
only
nine
years
old,
and
you
have
seen
that
I
was
not
much
good
for
anything
until
after
I
had
performed
the
horse
dance
near
the
mouth
of
the
Tongue
River
during
my
eighteenth
summer.
Of
course,
the
whole
Andy
Kaufman
angle
was
classic.
I'm
real
proud
of
that.
I
mean
that
is
something
people
are
still
talking
about
20
years
later,
making
movies
about
and
that
sort
of
thing.
I
mean
not
a
day
goes
by
that
someone
doesn't
mention
Andy
Kaufman
to
me.
Actually,
the
funny
thing
is,
after
all
these
years,
I've
got
all
these
new
songs
to
learn
for
the
show
we're
doing
at
Joe's
Pub,
so
it's
kind
of
fun
to
get
down
and
rehearse
new
things,
and
also
rethink
some
of
the
older
songs,
how
we're
going
to
do
them.
And,
in
a
funny
way,
each
death
is
different
and
you
mourn
each
death
differently
and
each
death
brings
back
the
death
you
mourned
earlier
and
you
get
into
a
bit
of
a
pile-up.
But
it's
funny
that
now
I'm
in
such
a
happy
situation,
I
look
more
objectively
at
my
own
past
and
see
what
others
have
seen
for
a
long
time
and
I'm
just
so
glad
I've
been
able
to
get
to
this
point.
But
this
show
reminds
me
that
there
are
other
aspects
to
me
besides
the
fact
that
I'm
a
funny
chick.
Carol
Burnett
was
particularly
funny.
She
swore
for
the
first
time
on
television
on
Larry
Sanders.
Especially
with
a
comedy,
you've
got
the
clear
cut
goal
of
trying
to
make
a
scene
funny.
It's
not
like
drama
where
you're
trying
to
achieve
some
kind
of
emotion
or
trying
to
further
the
story
along.
You're
trying
to
figure
out
what's
the
funniest
way
to
do
something.
Everybody
thought
I
was
a
crazy,
funny
person
who'd
do
anything,
and
that's
how
I
got
to
be
acceptable
to
everyone.
Failures
are
very
public,
and
successes
are
short
lived.
It's
the
pleasure
of
drawing
funny
pictures
that
makes
up
for
it.
Give
a
man
a
fish,
and
you'll
feed
him
for
a
day.
Teach
a
man
to
fish,
and
he'll
buy
a
funny
hat.
Talk
to
a
hungry
man
about
fish,
and
you're
a
consultant.
Hemingway
seems
to
be
in
a
funny
position.
People
nowadays
can't
identify
with
him
closely
as
a
member
of
their
own
generation,
and
he
isn't
yet
historical.
I
don't
know
who
the
hell
Paul
Lynde
is,
or
why
he's
funny,
and
I
prefer
it
to
be
a
mystery
to
me.
I
got
attention
by
being
funny
at
school,
pretending
to
be
retarded,
and
jumping
around
with
a
deformed
hand.
I
got
to
draw
monsters,
robots
and
write
funny
stories.
I
loved
doing
that
stuff
and
working
with
the
actors.
But
it
got
to
be
less
and
less
that
stuff
and
more
about
trying
to
be
everywhere
and
not
being
able
to
do
one
thing
very
enjoyably.
I
just
think
that
it's
such
a
good
show
and
timeless
and
still
very
funny,
and
that
just
makes
me
happy
to
have
that
whole
first
season
in
one
concentrated
space
for
people
to
enjoy
so
that
it's
not
hit
and
miss
trying
to
find
it
in
syndication
always.
I
know
some
people
say
I
can
be
funny.
But
there
is
always
a
deeper
meaning
to
what
I
say.
I
am
a
socialist
at
heart
and
have
the
interests
of
the
poor
in
mind.
When
people
see
how
I
manage
to
work
my
way
out
of
tough
situations,
it
gives
them
hope
in
their
own
life.
I
saw
28
Days.
I
don't
remember
rehab
being
like
a
day
camp
or
being
that
funny.
Rehab
is
a
dumping
ground.
It's
a
big
landfill.
I'm
not
a
very
serious
person.
You
know
how
they
say
that
clowns
are
very
funny
in
public
and
are
really
sad
at
home?
I'm
really
kind
of
stupid
at
home
and
more
serious
in
public.
I'm
so
tired,
but
I
can't
sleep...standing
on
the
edge
of
something
much
too
deep...funny
how
I
feel
so
much
but
cannot
say
a
word...we
are
screaming
inside,
oh,
but
we
can't
be
heard...so
afraid
to
love
you,
more
afraid
to
lose...clinging
to
a
past
that
doesn't
let
me
choose.
It
is
not
funny
that
anything
else
should
fall
down;
only
that
a
man
should
fall
down.
Why
do
we
laugh?
Because
it
is
a
gravely
religious
matter:
it
is
the
Fall
of
Man.
Only
man
can
be
absurd:
for
only
man
can
be
dignified.
It's
funny
that
it
all
becomes
about
clothes.
It's
bizarre.
You
work
your
butt
off
and
then
you
win
an
award
and
it's
all
about
your
dress.
You
can't
get
away
from
it.
It's
funny
when
people
say,
'I
don't
think
Julia
likes
me.'
Honey,
if
I
don't
like
you,
you're
going
to
know
about
it.
It's
funny,
like
15
years
ago
when
I
was
a
kid
doing
all
the
John
Hughes
movies,
I
remember
Bruce
Willis
was
the
only
guy
who
was
transitioning
from
television
into
film.
It's
only
I
have
seen
enough
of
it
and
the
funny
thing
is
now,
I
know
that
I'm
skinny,
because
I
know
there
are
even
smaller
clothes
in
the
store.
I
think
I'm
big,
when
I
was
big,
I
never
thought
about
it.
It's
painful
for
me
to
watch
someone
who
isn't
funny.
It's
horrifying
to
sit
in
the
back
and
watch
some
guy
who
just
totally
sucks.
It's
so
funny
how
my
name
has
always
been
such
a
big
deal.
When
I
was
growing
up,
my
family
was
always
moving.
I
had
to
meet
new
people
all
the
time.
And
they'd
laugh.
Jim
Carrey,
a
comic
genius,
has
a
harder
time
overcoming
the
public's
desire
for
him
to
be
funny
simply
because
he's
so
good
at
it.
Life
does
not
cease
to
be
funny
when
people
die
any
more
than
it
ceases
to
be
serious
when
people
laugh
Movies
either
work
or
they
don't
work
and
they're
either
funny
or
they're
not
and
we
work
very
hard.
To
achieve
that
kind
of
work
is
really
kind
of
delicate
stitching.
No,
no,
I
was
only
funny
on
stage,
really.
I,
I,
think
I
was
funny
as
a
person
toward
my
classmates
when
I
was
very
young.
You
know,
when
I
was
a
child,
up
to
about
the
age
of
12.
So
while
it
is
true
that
I
find
really
dark
stuff
funny
sometimes,
it's
also
true
that
as
a
writer
of
books
I
want
to
have
the
whole
range
of
human
emotions.
So,
deadpan
I
think
just
means
not
acknowledging
for
one
second
that
you
think
that
this
is
funny
and
clever.
Some
of
the
pictures
I
must
say
every
now
and
then
I
just
think
are
going
to
be
funny.
When
it
gets
that
much,
you
might
as
well
just
pull
out
all
the
stops
and
make
it
more
of
a
burlesque.
The
most
important
thing
is
to
write
material
that
YOU
think
is
funny.
If
you
don't
think
it's
funny,
but
you're
convinced
that
other
people
will
think
it
is,
well
they
won't.
