In Memoriam
Mabel Harrington
Mabel Harrington was born Mabel Mason on October 15, 1925.  She was the third daughter of Ray and Harriet Mason and they lived in Port Washington, New York.  Her father was a carpenter and her mother was a homemaker.

Mabel attended Port Washington High School and then went on to graduate from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota with a degree in English Literature.  It was there that she met and married Ben Harrington.  They moved to Durham, N. C. where Ben completed his M.D. at Duke University Medical School.

Their first son was born during that time, Ben, Jr..  Then they moved to Las Vega, Nevada where Ben went into practice, and daughters Rosalee, Esmerelda and Phoebe were born and a second son, Christopher.

Mabel taught school after the children were in  high school.  She had many hobbies -- needlework, gourmet cooking, photography, painting, writing poetry, and doing volunteer work.  She served on the Boards of the Salvation Army. the Children's Shelter, and the American Red Cross, and started the first Poinsettia Ball in Las Vegas.

She is survived by her children and her grandchildren -- Emily, 6, Francis, 10, Matthew, 9, Antonia, 8, Micky, 7, and Benjamin 2.

Mabel is remembered for her warm heart and her loving ways.

There never was a soul so gentle.

She will be missed.

From one of her students:
"It was Mrs. Harrington who taught me discipline and discrimination and the love of excellence.  As we struggled through incomprehensible poetry and lengthy novels, my mind caught fire and I began to love learning.  She gave me a lifetime legacy which is invaluable.  I think of her every time I crack the back of a brand new book and relish the adventure that lies ahead."
