Finches

Societies
We have a variety of beautiful finches.  We started out in finches with the Society Finch.  This cute little bird is still one of our favorites.  The society finch is quite interesting in that it is an unknown hybrid of several Manikins.   This finch has been bred in captivity for an extremely long period of time and has a VERY strong maternal instinct.  In fact, even the males will raise babies without the presence of a female!   Some claim that the best finch foster parents are trios of male societies.  We have often used ours to foster babies of other finches, but we do allow them to breed and raise their own babies as well.  Over the past few months, we have sold off our regular societies and replaced them with rarer societies such as crested, whites, dilutes, selfs, and pearls.  We have recently purchased a crested pearl and hope to add it to our breeding program within the next few weeks.

Here are some pictures of our young pearl societies.

Another picture of the same.

Here is a picture of their parents in the nestbox.

You can see one is staying on the eggs, even with me taking a picture.   They manage to hatch out 4 babies and they are WONDERFUL parents!  All 4 babies are stuffed with food and growing really fast.
