Scripture has it that,"... the truth shall set you free." The saying's universal truth proves its probability; that one's quest for the truth will, in the end, emancipate them from any obstacle. However, if we break this quote down even more, we find that there is an even deeper meaning to it than is intended. We all know what the truth is, but what exactly is freedom? Is it the freedom for servitude or slavery? Is it the freedom of a mass written down in ink? Or is it simply freedom from the self, or an understanding of one's being and belonging? I was born in the Philippines, but came here when I was around seven years old. People say that you could never be a president if you were not born here in American soil; probably because people think that you have to be a full-fledged American, both born and raised here in the United States, so to manage the country you know very well. However, in my case, I was born in the Philippines but raised here in the United States, and being born and raised here are two completely different factors. Yes, I was born in the Philippines but I'm American at heart. How can I prove this but through the ways and attitudes that I have come to adopt from American culture as a product of the school system, neighborhoods, etc.., a problem in which my parent's and I have conflicts due to their different cultural backgrounds. But however many times I can say I'm American in my ways and attitudes, but there is still this skin, this face, this color that I never really knew. " And THIS IS MY SLAVERY." |
