Happy Holidays

No More Final Exams = A Long and Deserving Break!

Circle K'ers,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving and that everyone did well on their final exams. I am so relieved right now knowing that finals are done with and that I don’t have to stress about it anymore. I wish every member of the Cascade Division the very best as you enjoy the company of your families this holiday season. Remember to drive safe and responsible if you are traveling somewhere during the break. And most importantly, RELAX! We all deserve a break now and then and this is one of the best times to do just that.

I want to tell everyone how proud I am of this division and all of the hard work that everyone has put in to providing service for your communities. Both Mandi and Erin have been doing wonderful things with their clubs and they should be commended for their involvement within Circle K International. Fall Conference was a very enjoyable experience for our division and I hope that you will consider attending next year. I am looking forward to District Convention in Yakima, WA this February and I hope that you will consider attending.

May everyone of the Cascade Division and your families and friends be blessed this holiday season with celebration and happiness!

In service and friendship,

Matt Moore
Cascade Division Lieutenant Governor

Cleanin' up the Beach

Pacific and Linfield are planning to have a rally in the near future. We plan to travel to Tillamook and clean up the surrounding beaches. Afterwards, we will stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory to try some delicious cheese and ice cream. This event will allow members to get to know members from the opposite clubs. The social will make the Cascade Division a stronger and more enjoyable place for those who have a life long commitment to service.

Curling Anyone?

Bonspiel figures to be a great time for all attendees. The weekend social will be from Jan 28-30 in snowy Victoria, B.C. The weekend will consist of fun events such as going to restaurants and learning how to play curling, a popular winter Olympics sport. More details will be provided later. Stay tuned!

Welcome to Yakima!

As most of you should know by now District Convention commonly referred to as DCON, will be held in Yakima, WA, February 18th to the 20th. I am very excited about this event and look forward to seeing everyone there. DCON is such a special event because it is PNW Circle K’s biggest district event of the year. It is a weekend where you can show off your division spirit to the rest of the divisions. It is also a weekend of recognition where those who have gone above and beyond this year in Circle K are rewarded for there efforts with awards and scholarships. Yes, you can win scholarships at DCON, another reason why you should attend. However, if you plan to attend DCON then there are tentative dates that you must make in order to attend. Here are some important things that you should know. Please go to http://www.pnwcirclek.org/pn/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=7 for more details on DCON.

- Cost of DCON per person is $150.00.

- Registration and other paperwork must be postmarked to PNW Circle K by Jan 31, 2005!

- A total of 22 awards are up for grabs this year. I would recommend both clubs to apply for nearly every single award. I think we are in great position this year to collect many of these. Note that most of these awards either require a letter of recommendation and/or an essay that you must write, so plan early! Awards must be postmarked by Jan 31, 2005.

- Four scholarships will be given out this year. Only three were awarded last year. There are the Bob Andrews, Gene O’Brian, Chuck Clutts, and Pat Maloney scholarships all at $1,500.00 that will go toward your education at your institution of attendance.

- Scholarships must be postmarked by Jan 31, 2005. You must turn in the application, an essay, one letter of recommendation from a Kiwanian, one letter of recommendation from a Circle K member, and a letter of verification of your student status on campus from the Dean of Students/Registrar. Again, plan early!

Election 2005!

Those who are on club or district positions such as President or Lieutenant Governor do not have much time left in their current positions. New officers will begin their yearly term on April 1, 2005. Because there is not much time until new people must take officer positions, I feel that it is important that I share with you the positions that you can run for this year. If you have any questions about any of these positions either ask me or ask the current officer of that particular position you are interested in.

Club Officers
President- You are the leader of your club. You are responsible for planning agendas and meetings and coming up with service projects and ideas as well as maintaining enthusiasm within your club.

Vice President- In the event that the President can not run a meeting, you must step in and lead the meeting. You should learn how your current President carries out the job so that you can run for President the following term.

Secretary- Record everything that is said at all club meetings. Send out these meeting notes to the rest of the club.

Treasurer- Keep records of all financial affairs of your club. Collect dues as well as other costs.

Historian- Take pictures of members at CK events. Make a scrapbook using these pictures at the end of the year.

Bulletin Editor- Make a newsletter for your club.

District Positions
When I talk about “the District” I am referring to all of the CK clubs that are a part of the Pacific Northwest District of Circle K International. There are currently seven divisions that make up our district. These are as follows:

Cascade Division: Pacific University, Linfield College

Columbia Division: Central Washington University, Washington State University, University of Idaho

Crater Lake Division: Oregon State University, Western Baptist College, Willamette University, Western Oregon University, Northwest Christian College

Inland Empire Division: Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Whitworth College, Spokane Falls Community College

Peach Arch Division: University of British Colombia, University of Victoria, Western Washington University, College of Fraser Valley

Rain-Cap Division: Garrett Heyns Education Center, Pacific Lutheran University, University of Pudget Sound, Saint Martin College

Snoqualmie Division: University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle University

The following positions are held on the District level. This means that you must attend all District events if you wish to hold one of the positions. To run for these positions you must attend DCON 2005!

District Governor- Basically it’s just like the President position, but you are in charge of the District rather than just one club.

District Secretary- A secretary position on the district level.

District Treasurer- A treasurer position on the district level.

Bulletin Editor- Make monthly editions of The PNW Post newsletter.

Lieutenant Governor- There is an LTG for each division. Check to oversee what is going on in your division, what things need to be improved upon, and report all findings to the District board.

District Chairs
The newly elected District board at DCON votes on who they would like to see have the District chair positions. District chairs are voted on during the New/Old Board meeting held at WSU in late March.

Club Building- Set an agenda for either creating a new CK club in the District or strengthen existing clubs.

Convention Chair- Plan all of the events for DCON 2006 held in Seaside, OR.

District Project- Share ideas with the District on what activities can be performed to meet the District project goals.

Fall Conference Chair- Plan all of the events for Fall Conference 2006.

Historian- Just like a club historian position, but at a District level.

Honors and Awards- Come up with the awards that will be presented during DCON.

K-Family- Share ideas with the District on how PNW can have better relations with Kiwanians.

Laws and Regulations- Our very own Michel Curtis currently holds this position! Be informed of the policy codes in the CK bylaws. Maintain order at District meetings.

Leaderscape- Keep the District informed about Leaderscape held in April.

Membership Retention and Recruitment- Make a plan that allows PNW members to bring students into the CK clubs.

Technology- Maintain the District website. As long as Oliver Chung is in college, I don't think anyone is going to get this position. Hehe

International Positions
International positions are either International President or International Trustee. They basically are in charge of working with Circle K clubs from different parts of the United States and in the rest of the world. If you wish to run for a position you must attend International Convention this August in Greensboro, NC. More info about this will be provided at a later date.

Pacific News

Pacific Circle K'ers participated in their annual divisional project, the No-Knock Food Drive. Members placed paper bags in front of homes around the Forest Grove area. Two days later, members returned to these houses and collected bags full of non-perishable food items. Pacific also received a special visit from the Pacific Northwest District Governor, Brian Egger, as bags were being collected. Pacific collected a total of 139 pounds of food; the food was taken to an Oregon Food Bank in Hillsboro. I would like to thank Brian for attending our project.

Michel, Mandi, Trista, Hilary, Jeff, Terra, and myself represented the Cascade Division at this years Fall Conference in Washougal, WA. The weekend was very entertaining. On Friday night, people watched movies. Saturday involved a day full of leadership activities as well as good food. Members enjoyed a delicious breakfast on Sunday before they had to depart.

Brian, Michel, Tiff, Janelle, and myself stayed in a yurt on November 19 during our club's retreat as a reward for all of the hard work that everyone had been putting in to making this club successful. The yurt was situated at a campsite in Tillamook, very close to the beach. Everyone had a great time, especially when we played Cranium and Texas Hold-Em.

Linfield News

Linfield helped McMinnville Kiwanis with their annual cheese packing fundraiser.

Members participated in Habitat for Humanity with one of their resident halls.

Jeff Baker and Terra Moreland represented Linfield strongly at Fall Conference. I was pleased to be able to meet these wonderful members.
