On May 2, 1998 the Japanese awoke like they normally did, preparing to do what they always did on a weekday. None of them knew right away that rock legend, Hideto Matsumoto was already dead.
He had been out drinking May 1st, just after recording his latest single, "Pink Spider". Every person has flaws and one of hide's, his drinking problem, may have been the death of him. He drank into the early morning of the 2nd with his brother and live-in girlfriend. They brought him home and saw to it that he was safely in bed before retiring themselves.
But for some reason, to which no one knows why, hide got up from his bed, went into the bathroom and attempted to hang himself from the bathroom door with a towel. His girlfriend, who had been worried about him, came into his room to check on him and found that he wasn't there. She looked in the bathroom and found him unconscious on the floor. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but died on the way there.
    Hideto Matsumoto was no more.
What was the cause of this mysterious death? Did hide have no idea what he was doing in his drunken state? His girlfriend was worried about him, though, so could she have known that he was struggling with something? He left no suicide note, he was at the height of his career...he was only thirty-three. How could he have just left like that? Was it, perhaps an accident? Was he rehearsing for a new outlandish on-stage effect?
No one will ever know. All we do know is that hide died at his own hands that fateful morning, lost to us forever.
