P " Swamp" John Groff (d. 1777)
of Martic Township

On February 16, 1747, Isaac Herr (HH25) sold 300 acres of his land on Beaver Creek to his son-in-law, John Grafft (P). It was part of the 500 acres surveyed on November 21, 1719 by John Taylor to Isaac Herr.
It was also part of the 800 acres granted to Isaac herr from the 5,000 acres warranted on November 22, 1717 by Martin Kundrick and Hans Herr (HH23), Isaac's brother, In his will dated October 4, 1747, Isaac Herr granted one third of his estate to his son-in-law, John Grafft, who by this time had paid for his land.
On March 20, 1762, John Grafft applied for a new title, reporting that he had lived on this 300 acre tract since February 16, 1747. The dwelling house of Isaac Herr had burned down some years before, and the title deed for the 800 acres from Kundrick and Heer had been consumed by fire. He had releases from heirs dated March 1, 1762
The Tract was resurveyed and contained 313 acres and 100 perches, near land of Henry Heer (HH251), Jacob Grafft ( N and ?B2) , and Michael Groff (O and I) He paid L32.6.3.

European Origins

A family tradition 582 states that a grandfather's clock owned by their family was originally passed from Joseph Graf to his son John, who died in 1777. If this is true, then the father of Swamp John Groff (P) may have been the Joseph Graf who was listed as MOG-A in Groff Book l, Page 244. He was born about 1690 and died after 1737, when he lived in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
He is included in this volume as MM Joseph Groff on page 156. He may have been a son of Hans Jacob Graf (GR311), who appears in thes volume on page 3. Joseph (?GR3112) may have been a brother of Johann Christian Graf (I and ?GR3111). If all this is true, then Swamp John (P) and Michael Groff (O) would have been first cousins

Groff Eshleman Burying Grounds

John Groff (P3) was buried in 1819 in the what has come to be known as the Groff Eshleman Burying Ground on Archery Lane a few hundred yards west of route 222 and north of Quarryville, Providence Township. It is located on the 800 acres granted to Isaac Herr (HH25).
His father Swamp John Groff (P), is probably buried there also, but there is no known marker. The marker for John Groff (P3) was in tact there in April 1988, as seen in the photograph on page 175 taken by Clyde L. Groff, but has since been broken into many pieces. The Groff Eshleman Burying Ground Association of Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was organized in 1985 to plan the restoration and preservation of this cemetery.

John immigrated by 1746.
