In 1998 I bought a 1994 R1100RS at 13,340 km. During that season I put on the bike another 48,000 km. Used 3-sets of tires and I made several changes. I installed 2-sets of bar-backs, on top of eachother, which made all the differance in me riding that bi e. I am only 5'-7" and at that time, in '98 I was 72 years old. I'd like to ride to Alaska, so if you feel like to drop me a line, please do so. I am very interesting in your back-bar. By the way, on Oct.5, 1999, cuming out of curve at 90-100 km/hrs, I failed noticing the gravel on the road. I lost the bike but I got away with a minor ankle brake. The doubled bar-backs did not brake, not even bent. The trouble was that the pannier's locking latch broke, the pannier left the bike, and as the bike and I were turning, while sliding on the surface, there was nothing to ke p the rear of the bike away from my leg. You cannot buy such a latch. The whole assembly cost 250.00, I took it apart and about to fabricate another one, this time from steel, instead of that inadiquate aluminum. Regards Bob

Thanks for taking the time to write your diary on the net. I've been telling everyone that I'm going from Calgary to Southern Utah this summar (hopefully last two weeks of May) on my own. I put about 2500 KM on my bike last summer going through BC and met some interesting people and experienced some freedom that I relished. Great photos! I particularly liked the one of Chicken, Ak. I remember it from about four years ago when I passed through on my way to Eagle. I was driving a Chevy pickup with two Grumman canoes on top and doing the Eagle to Circle thing on the Yukon river Next time I do that road it will be on the bike. The volcano (st augustine island) is actually 75 miles off the spit beach in Homer. I heard a lot of riders complaining about the rain. I'm thankful the only serious rain I experienced was heading west out of prince rupert (300 miles worth) on my alaska t ip last summer.

Drove to Alaska w/ buddy this July/Aug (98). I rode my cx500. He had a 86 pacific coast. Started in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Went as far as Homer, AK (my hometown). took the ferry from haines to prince rupert on the way back. 3 weeks total. Had a blast. will do it again someday on my beemer.
