Life's a Dance

It’s just past 7PM Saturday, March 10th. It’s a nice overcast night there is some drizzle floating in the skies. The kind that you can feel brush across your face, but is still not substantial enough to wet the ground. I am stuck at the Amtrak station in Austin, Texas. You’re probably thinking, “train station? But Pete, you must be the only one there.” And actually, yes, I am. Let me tell you how I got here. It all started with all the drama that was all around in my life. I wanted to take a break from San Antonio, even if only for a night. Fortunately my friend Arturo, offered me a place to crash. Ok, so you want to know about the train. While there are many more conventional and convenient forms of transportation, I had never been on a train before. An hour and a half drive, or a three-hour train ride to experience something I had always wanted to. Well, obviously, since I am stuck here at the train station, I opted for the latter.

So what’s the big deal, it’s just a train ride? Uh, not really, at least to me it wasn’t. The train ride represented to me my willingness to try new things. I’m not saying I’ll say yes to just about anything, rather that as I grow older, I have become more open-minded and more willing to try new things. I want to try new things and say yes or no based on my experience and not based on other people’s experiences. And I want these experiences to define who I am. For example, I knew that I did not want to leave Austin without grabbing some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but I knew that I didn’t care to have an espresso at one of the cafes. Ok, so those are lame examples, but you get the idea.

I guess I have learned that we should loose our fear of the unknown. We should be willing to try new things that will allow us to make valid choices in life. We have to take these opportunities to learn, about ourselves, about who we are and what we are capable of. These are decisions we have to make to make us unique. On the flip side, of course, there are things that I know I don’t care to try. I.e. drugs or getting plastered. So when presented the opportunity to try something new, why not give it a shot? Like the song says, “sink or swim you gotta give it a whirl…Life’s a dance you learn as you go.”
