Signal Processing for Communication
Wireless communication is redefining the way we live. From cell phones to wireless LANs, the technology is everywhere and anywhere. With increasing number of users, more demand for higher data rate, connectivity in the most adverse conditions (like in high speed vehicles) there is a lot of scope of research in Signal Processing for Communication. Using several signal processing techniques, we can counter the adverse channel affects like multipath fading. A very famous example is OFDM, which can convert frequency selective fading to frequency flat fading for the individual sub-carriers using simple yet effective techniques like cyclic prefix. Also modern DSP techniques like FFT make real time implementation of such systems possible.
I have been working on MC-CDMA demodulation for some time under the guidance of Prof. U.B. Desai of IIT Bombay, India. Together we have designed several demodulators for MC-CDMA (downlink and uplink) based upon the criterion of Minimum Probability of Error Demodulation (MPOE). Not only do these detectors have a better BER performance, they also exhibit better Near Far Resistance in case of uplink transmission. Please follow the link below to delve deeper into the topic
My B.Tech Project, of one year duration is on Software Defined Radio. Now Software defined Radio is an effort to bring the code as close to the antenna as possible. The idea is to use just a A/D conversion after antenna and do all the processing in Software. The benefits?; several. Software is reconfigurable on the fly and its easier to work with different standards at the same time. The disadvantages ?; well computational complexity is a bottle neck but clock speeds never stop increasing so that should not be a problem very soon. The ideal behavior is difficult to achieve because of the lack of such high speed ADCs that can sample the RF signal at say 900 Mhz directly, but it is possible to bring down the signal to a I.F of say 10.7 Mhz and then do the sampling.
My project involves building of a TV system which can demodulate a TV broadcast in software. I will be using the GNU Radio software library and will be contributing to it as well. I will be using a PCI DAS card for data acquisition along with some RF frontend and then the whole demodulation process will be in Software. I will put up more information as the project advances below
