From:  "The Jersey Church Through the Years" by Mrs. A.G. Boughner:

"In the spring of 1770 (the same spring in which occurred the Boston Massacre) these hardy pioneers from Essex and Morris counties in New Jersey, took their families and, with oxen, started their long trek over the mountains to their new home in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Somerset County.
"They arrived in the month of May and the first thing that they needed was shelter.  Cabin after cabin was built, near a spring if possible.  Five years after their arrival they met on Wednesday, June 14th 1775, and solemnly constituted a church at Turkeyfoot and Sandy Creek Glads.  For 13 years after organizing, the church members met at various homes.  Then in January 1788, they built a two-story log structure with a gallery, or porch.  The church was founded in 1775 but not built until 1788, because of the Revoluntionary War.
"Among those having served as pastors was Nathaniel Skinner, Jr., (1799).  Jersey Church records show that Thomas King, his wife (Nancy) Ann and her mother, Sarah Skinner (wife of Reuben) asked for their letter of dismission from the church Oct  17, 1817.  It's known that Thomas King moved to Perry Co., OH about this date."-----

Data taken from records at the Perry Co. Genealogical Society in New Lexington, OH:

Nathaniel SKINNER b: c1706  married Elizabeth [King] b: c1718  d: 07 SEP 1799

He was born at Woodbridge, New Jersey and came to Lower Turkeyfoot Twp, Somerset Co., PA with the migration of some 15 to 20 families who came to that region about 1773 and formed what came to be known as the "Jersey Settlement."  He and his wife are buried side by side in the Jersey Baptist Church yard near Ursina.  The stones over their graves read:

The body of    Here lies the body of

aged 95 years.  (His stone is legible)  (The wife's not so good)

the census of 1800 does not show the name of Nathaniel Skinner, Senior, but the family of his son, Robert, shows two men abouve the age of 45, and it is likely that the father was living with the son.  The PA land records show that under a warrant dated October 15, 1785 Nathaniel secured 122 acres of land which was surveyed Apr. 10, 1786.  The land is located directly across the road from the Jersey Baptist Church and extends up both sides of the draw which leads northwest from the Jersey Church toward the present site of the Bethel Church.  This land passed to his son, Robert.  The land was surrounded on three sides by land owned by Reuben Skinner, Samuel Skinner, James Skinner, and John Skinner, and the location is referred to in the land records as "Skinner's Row."

Data taken from records at the Perry Co. Genealogical Society in New Lexington, OH:

Reuben SKINNER was born in New Jersey.  He is buried in the Jersey Churchyard in Somerset Co., PA.  The date of his death and age are taken from the tombstone.  He was a forgeman by trade and Robert COLBORN was once his apprentice.  The Jersey Church records show that Thomas KING, his wife, Ann, and Sarah SKINNER asked for their letters of dismission Oct. 17, 1817.  It is known that Thomas KING and his wife moved to Perry Co., OH about this date.  There can be no doubt that her mother went with them at that time.  The tombstone in Hopewell Churchyard northeast of Somerset, OH gives the date of her death as show above.  Probably as early as 1796 Reuben SKINNER moved from Lower Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., PA, to Saltlick, now Springfield Twp., Fayette Co., PA, and built a mill which gave the name "Skinner's Mill Run" to the location.  The region was also frequently referred to as "Indian Creek."  The families living there were members of the Jersey Baptist Church of Lower Turkeyfoot, which was over Laurel Hill some 11 or 12 miles southeast of Skinner's Mill Run.  The Township records show that Reuben SKINNER was assessor for the now township as early as Jan. 13, 1793.  He and his son, Reuben, Jr., are still listed as living in the township in the census of 1810 and it is very probably that he died there.  In 1843 the Indian Creek Baptist Church was organized in a log cabin near Skinner's Mill Run.  Several of the later generations of Skinners still live there, although many of them moved to Perry Co., OH shortly after 1820.  A considerable number of the family are buried at Indian Creek Churchyard and others at His (?) Chapel a few miles south of Indian Creek.

Notes for Robert Skinner:
Data taken from records at the Perry Co. Genealogical Society in New Lexington, OH:

On Dec. 23, 1794 Nathaniel Skinner, Sr., conveyed by warrentee deed his land which was located directly across the road from the Jersey Church to his son, Robert Skinner.  The estate of Robert Skinner (Estate #15, 1823) was administrated in Somerset Co., PA Aug. 25, 1823.  The widow, Mary, and the children shown below were named and the husbands of the daughters were named.  An original bill from Samuel SKINNER for caring for Robert during his last illness is included among the papers.  There is an original note in favor John SKINNER signed by Robert Skinner, spelled with one "n."  The record says that it is believed that Cortland SKINNER had five children.  The administrators were John RUSH and John SKINNER.  John SKINNER spelled his name with one "n" and his mother spelled hers with two "n's".  The census of 1790 spells the family name "Soiner." (?)  Evans RUSH stated that he believed the wife, Mary, was Mary WILLETTS and a daughter of Prudence WILLETTS of Turkeyfoot.  Mrs. Adaline Thorpe BLACKMARR stated that she understood that the maiden name of her great-grandmother was WILLIS.

Obituary from the Somerset Press, May 18, 1905;

RACHEL JOHNSON
Rachel Johnson was born in Washington Co., PA, April 24, 1813 and with her parents, Aaron and Sarah Johnson, moved to Perry Co., OH in 1836.  Two years later she was united in marriage to John Skinner.  To this couple was granted the favor of over 61 years of happy wedded life.  In June fo 1899 death visited her home and took away the husband.  This bereavement, together with her weight of years, hastended the breaking down of a remarkably strong mind and constitution and for the last two years she has been in helpless condition.  She was a regular attendant of the Baptist Church, but never made any public profession of her belief until about 5 years ago, when she was baptized and became a member of the Mt. Perry Christian Church.
She departed this life at the advanced age of 92 years and 17 days and for nearly three score and ten years lived in this community.  She loved her neighbors, was faithful to her friends and was a benediction to the sick.  "She hath done what she could."
The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Saturday forenoon, May 13 from the home of her sister, Mrs. Jane Wilson, where the deceased had been making her home for a number of years up to the time of her death.  The services were help in the Hopewell Baptist Church, where the deceased was a regular attendant for many years and were conducted by Rev. Notes for Samuel Skinner:
The following letters were written by Samuel Skinner, brother of Rhoda (Skinner) Black.  With their parents, George and Mary (Goodin) Skinner and family, they came to Washington Township, Sandusky County, Ohio in 1830 from Perry County, Ohio.  They were of Scottish descent.  Samuel Skinner was born in 1814 and died in Fremont in 1902.  He was the father of one son, George Washington (Wash) Skinner and nine daughters.   Copied as written, by Marilyn (Snyder) Ziegman, 628 W. North St., Fostoria,OH 44830

                                Fremont, Sept.10, 1893

I have often thought of writing something of my life for my children to read when I am gone, which will not be very long anymore. Soon will be 80 years old.

I was born in Perry County, Ohio May 10, 1814. Came to this county April 10, 1830. Soon will be 60 years ago. It was truly a black swamp then, there was but three (3) families then living in Washington township  when we settled in it.  Not one laid-out road in it.

I helped to cut the first one, which was the Rollersville Road.  The township was not named and not till 1831.  Quite a strife what it should be called. Many wanted it called Perry as a good many had settled in it from Perry County. Well, I had formed with the young people where I came from and it did seem to me I could not stay here.  Could see nobody, nothing but the big woods and wild  animals - they was very plenty. I have killed wagon loads of deer. If I had a little money I certainly would not staid here. Should have run away from my father's home. But having no money kept me here. My Mother  died one year after arriving here; left Father and me,  George, Aaron, Nathan and Mary Ann, a little girl. We done the best we knew how to keep house. But it wasn't very pleasant for at least, then Father married again.   (Sally Johnson in 1833) Two more boys in the family.   That made it worse if possible. I then went to the Portage River to work at 8 dollars per month where Elmore is now. I put over many lonesome days. I was then about 18 years old.  In the fall of 1833 on the 17th day of October I married Elizabeth Geeseman. About 10 days later moved in a log cabin we built inside of 10 days on the go acre lot that Tom Hufford now owns. There had not been a tree cut on it unless it might of been a coon or (?) tree. It was a very wet lot; at times it was near all under water. When we began to keep house we was very poor indeed. I think if everything we had would not brought 50 dollars.

The house was 16" x 18" clapboard. Roof held down by waited poles, floor of split puncheon, door of same material Board holes in the wall and put poles in for bedstead. Basswood bark for cord.  Don't think there was 1/2 pound of nails used in the house. Cut a hole in the walls, tacked strips across and pasted grease paper on   it for window. We had no chairs in the house for 2 year.  Used stools made out of split basswood No saw     mills; could not get lumber If we even had the money.

                                        Sept.11, 1893

The wild animals were deer, wild turkey, wolves, wildcat, coon, opossum and porcupine. Many a night I got up and shot off the gun to drive the wolves away. But never killed one.  We went to work was both of us well and hearty. Cleared off a patch that winter for corn and potatoes. In the spring, planted it Growed nice until  the June flood came. Everything drowned out We saw hard times indeed. We often had no bread for days at a time We sifted bran and made bread of that.  At times lived on corn bread and wild meat mostly. I had to work from home 1/2 of the time and go to the river to get work about 6 miles. Got 50 cents per day. Got one bushel of corn for a day's work. We used corn bread mostly. Knowing what 1 do now and was young again I would not take a section of land there as a gift and go through the same hardships. You may think that strange to look at things as they are now. But it seemed all rite we did not no anny better. We worked with a will. The next July, Wash was born. Then we had something to amuse ourselves with. Our family increased fast.  Soon had a family of 10 children and it makes my heart ache to think back how they was raised compared to the way children are raised now They went barefoot 8 months in the year and dotes very scanty indeed.

                                       Dec.14, 1893

Since writing the above, I have had a hard attack of  kidney trouble. Think I will never get over it. Am much better than I was. In looking over some papers today I found a letter from my Uncle Samuel Goodin dated 1854. it made me think of my old relatives that have passed away. Not one uncle left. I feel that my time is short here; will have to leave you all and also the property that we worked so hard for. Hope you all will use it to good advantage whatever may be left You children are scattered over a large territory.
Been looking for some of you to come and see us for some time. Got a card from Wash today saying Em and Ann would be here next week, so will have to wait another week. So goes the time, one week after another. The reunion we had last fall done us a great favor. Wish it could be repeated. But that can't hardly be. December 14, 1893 Your Mother died March the 8th 1863. Some over one year, married the widow Guyer (Sarah Guyer in 1870) of Grand Rapids, Wood County, Ohio. Since then have seen many cloudy days with some sun shine.
Now I don't know what further to say. if I had the education that many have I could write much more.   I am feeling pretty well but still have the disease working on me. Am so light headed many times most fall down. Am much like my brother, David was. My six sisters are dead and two brothers out of twelve of us. I may write more hereafter.

                             Signed, Samuel Skinner

December, last day of the year '93

It is dark and I am alone. Sarah went West to see her girls. I feel real lonesome. Once there was a large family; now it seems I must stay alone. Think myself I had not ought to taking my age m consideration and the disease I have. Don't sleep so well have frequently to get up 6 to 9 times a night. You children are far away, most of you and you all have families and home to look after. I don't want to find any fault. You all   done what you could for me to make it pleasant for me. I have to much to do and look after the condition I am in. Don't know what to do for the best.
We went to Jane's Christmas to a fine turkey roast.   It weighed 18 pounds.  We had a good first rate dinner.  We all enjoyed it.  Now I am all alone.  Good night.  I may not behold another day.

                             Signed, Samuel Skinner

                             Saturday, May the 5th, '94

I am still alive for which I am thankful. I am very much aflicted with rheumatism as I suppose it is, otherwise am pretty well. About 50 years ago I was on jury to try Mr. Sperry for murdering his wife. It commenced Monday morning. Saturday at noon we got the charge from the judge. We stood 6 to 6 till Sunday about 9 o'clock we called the Judge to give this charge over on certain points.. Went back to our room and soon agreed; found him guilty of murder in the first degree.   All circumstancial evidence. Mr. Rose and I were the last to agree to it. He was sentenced to be hung on Sunday. Before he was to hang his children was brought in to see him. He managed to get a small pocket knife of his little boy. After they left he opened the large blood vessel in his arm and bled to death. That was the last of him. Well, now I am the only one living that had anything to do with the trial. Judge Bowen lived at Merion been dead many years. Dr. Rawson was Clerk of theCourt, he is dead some years. John Strole was sheriff and Peter Burgoon Deputy. Both gone. Cooper R. Watson, Homer Everett, Bish Eddy and W.W. Culver was the lawyers. They to are dead. I have forgotten some of the jurymen names. Michael Overmire was one. Joseph Reed, James Rose, Henry Havens, Mr. Sandford and myself. That is all I can remember. But they are all gone. Not one left but me that had anything to do with the trial. How strange I never would like to try another such a case. I just thought it might be interesting to you to read. I don't remember the year. Think about 50 years ago. (1842)
Now something else.  I came here in the spring of '30 and they is but five male persons here now that was here when I tame and they was little boys then. But Dr.     Beugrand, he was my age, 16. Wm. Herbster, Wm. Tyler, D.H. Roberts, Bill and Dr. Beugrand, that makes the five. In five days more I will be 80 years Old.   I feel that my rase is most run but willing to live longer; Imay write more here after but life is uncertain and death is certain I have strange simptoms of becoming paralized that comes very sudden. So I may never write anymore. I bid you all farewell.

                             Signed, Samuel Skinner

                             October the 17,1898

65 years ago today I was married the first time.  Don't seem half that long.  Think I have suffered more this summer than all my life before and still a great suifferer yet in mind as well as bodily suffering.  Don't know what we will do.  Both so aflicted I dreamed the other night I was going south east to our old cabin.   There was Jane trying to clear a patch for corn next spring. Those things trouble me to think how you children was raised compared to the way they are now.

Since writing the above have suffered terrible with kidney trouble. We are not living as I should like.  The children have homes, can't leave to make it pleasant for us. They are far away.  Don't see them often.  Think they might come oftener.  I learned our President died last night.  I feel that I must soon follow and leave all things here. Solom thought wish I could see all once more.  Try and prepare for the end.

Taken from the Perry Co. Record, Somerset, Ohio; Friday 8 April 1825:

OBITUARY

DIED---On the 1st inst. at his residence, near this place, the Rev. SMITH GOODIN, aged about 47 years.  Mr. Goodin was born in the state of New Jersey, of respectable parents.  In early life he professed to have become aquainted with hos lost condition, as an helpless sinner; and by believing on the Friend of Sinners, left the burden of his sins at the foot of the Cross.  He was soon baptized a member of the regular Baptist Church at Turkey Foot, Pennsylvania, where he was highly esteemed for his piety and good morals.
He emigrated to this state in early times, and with his then firm constitution and active limbs, he reduced the thick forest and fell'd the sturdy oak.  He was one of the few, that was constituted into a regular Baptist Church, at Hopewell in 1810.  He held several public offices in this county, and in 1823 was elected County Commissioner, by almost a unanimous vote.  But, notwithstanding his literary advantages were limited, still he shone most conspicuous as an humble Christian, and an active Minister of the Gospel of Christ.
Both from the pulpit and in private circles, he ceased not to warn the impenitent sinner of his impending danger.  He was surely a son of consolation in giving encouragement to the mourning penitent and long will the Baptist Churches remember his healing art, to inculcate peace and concord among them.  He left our world at the time he seemed host useful, and in the zenith of his glory.
He was interred at the Baptist meeting house, amidst a numerous and weeping assembly.  He was a good citizen, a kind husband, and an indulgent father.  He left an affectionate widow, and seven children to mourn their irreparable loss.  We would only add that if good morals, sound judgement, habitual industry, and real piety constitute a great man, then surely a great man this day has fallen in Isreal.
"'Tis finish'd, 'tis done, the spirit is fled, Our brother is gone; the Christian is dead, the Christian is living in Jesus's love, And gladly receiving a kingdom above."

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES:    PLEASANT TOWNSHIP
Text taken from the website:   http://heritagepursuit.com/HarPleasant.htm

"DAVID GOODIN, retired hotel-keeper, Kenton, was born in Somerset County Penn., May 31, 1805, and is the only living son of Smith and Nancy (Skinner) Goodin. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, whence they emigrated, settling near Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio, in 1808. Smith Goodin was among the early pioneers of that county, where he died in the forty-seventh years of his age. The widow and her children, three sons and two daughters, came to Hardin County in January, 1830, and David Goodin succeeded John W. Williams in a hotel standing on the site now occupied by Bans Block, known as the Goodin Block, in Kenton. Here our subject was
engaged as hotel proprietor for fifteen years, being among the first that started in this section. He afterward turned the hotel into business rooms, which were destroyed by fire in 1856, subsequent to which he erected the present structure. For the past thirty years, he has lived a quiet and unostentatious life, attending to the landed estates in this county and in Iowa, where he had a large tract of land. He was one of the founders of the Kenton Savings Bank, of which he was, for some years, one of the directors, still retaining an interest in the institution. He was elected Associate Judge in 1840, serving for seven years to the satisfaction of his constituents.

He also served in the City Council several terms, and has always taken an active interest in the public welfare of his county. Judge Goodin was joined in marriage in Somerset, Ohio, in December, 1825 to Miss Sarah Kishler, a daughter of John Kishler and a native of Pennsylvania, where her family were pioneers of Mifflin County. This union has resulted in ten children, five living, viz. : Alfred, resident of Nevada, Iowa; Elizabeth, widow of William Stanley, and resident of Des Moines City, Iowa; Isabel B., wife of Dr. John Dimmett, residing in Laramie, Wyoming; Mary J., widow of Charles Peet, residing with her parents on the homestead; and David E., at home."-----

"Horace's Notes"

John Barker
Wife Nancy Goodin

John was born in New York, probably Oneida Co, in Feb. 1808 and was brought to Perry Co., Ohio the next year. He was married there in 1830. Nancy was the daughter of Colonel Samuel and June Skinner Goodin.  Both the Skinners and the Goodins were pioneer families in Perry Co.  Ohio Their family held to the Primitive Old School Baptist Church.  John was authorized to preach, but seldomdid. They lived on a farm south of Somerset in Perry County Ohio and his advicewas often sought on matters of public interest.  He was director of the poor in Perry County in 1859.  Above his fireplace mantle was a picture of Oliver HazardPerry and he always said the Oliver was a cousin of his.  His granddaughter Miss Hickman of Newark Ohio still has this picture (1932).  He died August 11, 1890.  Nancy was born in 1812 and died in 1892.  Both are buried in the Hopewell cemetery near Somerset beside the church where they held their membership for so many years.  The Goodins are of English descent.

Notes for William T. Skinner, Jr.:
Data taken from records at the Ohio Historical Society at Columbus, OH:

William Todd Skinner married Catherine E. Ohlinger and lived east of Somerset.  Their children were Rebecca Jane, John Melick, Isaac Ohlinger, Mary Catherine, George Marshall, Ernest William, and Rezin Beem.
After father William's death, the sons built their mother a two-story home on State Route 668 from bricks they'd molded from clay they'd dug and baked in a small kiln built in a field.  It was later son Rezin's family home until recent years.  The William Skinners and infant children are buried in Baptist cemetery east of Somerset.
John married Sarah Ford, lived near Sego, had a son Homer, married to Sarah White.  Their children, Marion, Floyd, Kenneth, and Allen.  Ernest married Mary Amy Kendall, daughter of Elisha and Martha (Mattie) Fluke Kendall of Hopewell Twp.  Ernest moved to Mt. Perry area.  Their children were a son who lived a few days, Inez May, Martha Catherine, married Orley Friley after retirement, Rachel Zora, and Ruth Hazel, married Miles Lattimer---children Harold married Dorothy Hoover, then Doris Foucht Axline, Annabelle married Paul Wilson, Mary Lee, married Kenneth Smith.
June 5, 1915, Rezin married Bessie Storts of New Lexington.  Their children were Gerald, married Sylvia Brooks---children Gerald Jr., Linda Feeman, and Carolyn Wells--and Carlos, married Betty Shaffer---children Kathleen, Karla, Richard, and Karen.
Ernest Skinners were members of Mt. Perry Methodist Church, where some of the family sang in the choir and Rachel taught Sunday School.  Ernest farmed with Morgan horses from registered stock and raised shorthorn cattle.  Salt was bought by the barrel for home use and for cattle.  Ernest cut farm timber to build a home, barn, summer kitchen, and other out buildings---having to buy only roofing and finishing material.  Ruth and Miles Lattimer remained on the home farm, Amish Ridge Road, where they reared their children.
The Ernest Skinners' children attended Mt. Perry School and Catherine, Rache, and Ruth took two additional years at Somerset High, graduating from there.  Catherine and Rachel then went to Perry County Normal School at Junction City.  From there they went to teach school in one-room schools, relieving men teachers for military service during WW-I.  Rachel also attended Muskingum College with money she'd saved while teaching.
At age 27, Rachel went to Athens State Hospital where she spent forty-two years, then took an apartment at Worley Terrace, Columbus, for ten years, to be near her sister Catherine.  Two years ago she became a resident of Fairfield Care Center, Thornville---enjoys fairly good health at 82---participates in Bible study and special religious services and likes to help other residents there.  While at Worley Terrace, she did ceramics as a hobby, also enjoyed doing practical needle work.

Notes for Jehu Brooke Jones, Jr.:
Text taken from:   "HISTORY OF PERRY COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, SURNAMES BEGINNING WITH 'J'"

Transcribed by:  Timothy E. Fisher

JONES, JEHU B., was born in 1813, in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, and was but two years old when his parents, Jehu Jones, Sr., and Jane (Kilpatrick), settled on the farm now held by the heirs of S. C. Dick. This farm had then about fifteen acres partly cleared; here these pioneers lived until 1844, when mother Jones, and, ten years later, father Jones, were called to rest. The sons, who grew to manhood, are: David, who married Miss Jane Pugh, and who died in Pike township, leaving three sons and two daughters; John, who lives in Warren county, Illinois, and who married Miss Elizabeth Rush, having  five sons and four daughters; Jehu B., who married Miss Rebecca Goodin, March, 1846, and still resides on the farm adjoining the ancestral  homestead---his wife died in 1866,leaving two sons; David, who resides in Blackford county, Indiana, and who is married to Miss Addie Shull, now the mother of two daughters, and George M., who is single, and remains with his father. There are two daughters, Phidelia, the wife of Charles Stickel, a successful tanner and currier, near Somerset, blessed with four sons and one daughter, and Miss Mary, who shares with her brother, George, and her father, the comforts and the cares of the homestead. Jehu B. Jones is worthy of the beautiful home he enjoys,  and the broad acres he has transformed from a forest waste to fruitful fields. He has held several offices of trust and profit in his township, and never yet was a candidate when he did not show strength beyond the lines of his party. True to his convictions of right and duty he has not always remained loyal to party, but while acting within party lines, no man is more faithful to his ticket, or more zealous for the right. He possesses brave impulses, is true to his friends, generous to his foes, benevolent to the poor, sympathizes with the suffering and hates the oppressor, while he defends the victim.-----

Following is a document I copied while researching the Probate records in Perry Co., OH.  There is no date on this document but I would estimate it to be after 1866 as that is the year of the death of Jehu's first wife, Rebecca GOODIN, that is assuming she died while married to him and not divorced from him.

Martha E. Joens Defendant

    PETITION

Your petitioner Jehu B. Jones of said county of Perry Ohio, represents that he has been a resident of the state of Ohio for the year last past, and is at present a bona fide resident of the said county of Perry Ohio.

"JOEL KISHLER GOODIN, son of John and Elizabeth (Kishler) Goodin, of Ohio, was born in Perry County, Ohio, February 24, 1824. His father, who was of Scotch-English descent, and a man of much ability, died at his home in Kenton, Hardin Co., Ohio, January 20, 1877, aged seventy-seven years. His mother, a prominent and esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, died in Kenton in 1858, leaving seven children. Joel, the eldest of the family, was educated in the common schools of Tiffin, Seneca Co., Ohio, supplemented by a course of study at the Norwalk Seminary, and the Columbus Academic and Collegiate Institute, both in Ohio. His attention while in school was more especially devoted to scientific and business branches, his vacations being occupied as clerk in mercantile business. When he was twenty-three he took charge of the settlement of the mercantile business of his father, the latter having sold out his store. He also commenced the study of law in the office of Bradley Champ, in Kenton, with whom he subsequently formed a partnership in real estate and brokerage business, which continued about three years. He was admitted to the practice of law by the Supreme Court of Ohio, February 28, 1834, having previously been in mercantile business at Kenton, Ohio, about two years, and for a short time on a farm. He was married at Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, January 8, 1846 to Miss Elizabeth Christ, who later was one of the honored pioneer women of Kansas, and who died in Cincinnati, Ohio, May 21, 1870, at the age of forty-six years, leaving two sons--Charles W., and John F. C.  On May 16, 1854, Mr. Goodwin sic with his wife and two children started for Kansas, and on the 16th of August, 1854, settled on the Wakarusa, four miles southwest of the present site of Lawrence, where he lived with his family through the troublous and exciting years of territorial strife, and was known at home and abroad as a staunch and reliable Free-state man, and an open, outspoken friend to the cause. He was appointed by Governor Reeder as the first Justice of the Peace in Kansas Territory; was one of the Free-state candidates for the first Territorial Council, and delegate or officer in nearly every Free-state Convention held in the Territory. He was Clerk of the House of Representatives under the  Topeka Constitution when the Legislature was dissolved by Colonel Sumner, July 4, 1856, Clerk of Territorial Council in 1857, and Auditor of State in 1858. In the latter year he opened an office as an attorney in Douglas County and subsequently removed to Ottawa, Franklin County, where he is still engaged in the practice of his profession. He was elected Kansas State Representative in 1866, and re-elected to same position in 1867. His present wife was Mrs. Catherine A. Coffin, nee Taylor, of Baldwin City, and daughter of Rev.  Nathan Taylor, formerly president of Baker University. Mr. Goodwin sic is a member of the I. O. O. Following are two obituaries from unknown papers, but presumably are from that local area (Roseville, Somerest).

CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE

CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE, son of DANIEL M. and CATHERINE STICKEL, was born July 1, 1842,  in Somerset,  Perry  county, Ohio.             On  April  2, 1871,  he was united  in marriage to MISS PHIDELIA  J. JONES.  To them eight children were born,  two  of  whom, GEORGE  and  MRS. JESSIE MOORE preceded him in death.
When  the  war  broke  out  in  1860,  MR. STICKEL volunteered  in  Company  G,  Thirty-first  Regiment, O.V.I.   He was wounded at Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863  but  after  a  season  of hospitalization  he re-enlisted  and  served  throughout the remainder of the war. He was interested in public affairs and in people in general.
One very beautiful thing he and his good wife did, an act that will always  be  looked  upon  and remebered in this community  as exemplary, was  that these two people took three children of their deceased daughter and son-in-law and made a home for them.
MR.  STICKEL  is  survived  by the  following near relatives:  His  aged  wife, five sons, DONALD of New Lexington,  FRANK of  Somerset,  FRED of Zanesville, CHARLES  of  Newark,  SHERMAN  of East Fultonham; 22 grandchildren  and four  great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Notes for Dorothy Mae Helriggle:
Article taken from the Zanesville Signal of 11 Feb. 1939:

COMELY EMPLOYE OF GLASS PLANT IS FIRST WOMAN
IN MUSKINGUM CO. TO MAKE "SOLO" PLANE FLIGHT

Likely as not, that small yellow monoplane you see flying over the city these days is operated not by a man, as you probably supposed, but by a young woman---Muskingum county's first feminine pilot.
She is Dorothy Helriggle Stickel, 22, of South Zanesville, an employe of the Hazel-Atlas No. 2 plant.
For more years than she can remember, Mrs. Stickel has been interested in aviation.  But only recently did she become serious enough about it to take flying lessons.
An apt pupil, she was quick to learn the fundamentals of airplane operation and after only eight and a quarter hours of instruction under "Professor" Bill Bullock, was ready to make her first solo flight at the local airport on Frazeysburg road.  This was considered remarkable in view of the fact that the average student requires about 12 hours' tutoring before being permitted to fly alone.
The comely young woman's initial flight was a abbreviated hop which consisted, more or less, of a quick takeoff and a bumpy landing.
Once she shook off her nervousness, however, she climbed back into the Taylor Cub plane and soared away on another and longer flight.
She wasn't frightened, she said, but she did heep her fingers crossed on that first venture just to make sure she didn't forget any of the pertinent details about bringing the ship back to earth.
Mrs. Stickel, wife of J.J. Stickel, became a pupil of "Professor" Bullock last October.  Her husband, also an aviation enthusist, suggested that they both enroll in the "class."  They made excellent progress and recently were granted student permits by the United States Department of Commerce, the first to be issued here.
The licenses which they hold permit them to fly alone, but prohibit carrying passengers.
Since receiving her permit from the government, Mrs. Stickel has made several flights and now has two and a half hours' flying time to her credit.
Aside from actual flying, the Stickels are interested in all sorts of literature dealing with aviation.  The bookshelves in their home are lined with books and magazines on the subject.
Mrs. Stickel entertains no ideas of becoming a famous flier.  She looks upon aviation as a hobby and a thrilling adventure.-----

This cause coming on to be heart on the petition and proofs, the court finds the defendant, Keith Moore, has been duly served with summons personally.

EMPTY STOLEN PURSE FOUND IN COURTHOUSE

"A purse stolen from Mrs. Keith Moore of East Fultonham in a downtown store Wednesday afternoon was recovered early Thursday in the washroom of the courthouse but the $110 it contained was missing.
"Mrs. Moore said she was in a crowded store and felt she had been bumped or shoved by another woman shopper, but did not see the woman who had grabbed the purse and fled."---

Now this article wouldn't have interested me near as much if it hadn't mentioned that Mrs. Keith Moore was from East Fultonham.  As far as I know there was only one Keith Moore in East Fultonham and that was my father.  According to their marriage certificate they were married in Greenup Co., KY on February 2, 1949.  However, the date of this article is Dec 3, 1948.---

Personal note from Charles Clayton Moore:

I had not heard from my Aunt Maxine in nearly 35 years, since we moved from OH to FL when I was 13.  We just lost contact with each other.  I conducted a search for her name on the Internet in May of 1998 and three listings came up.  One of them was her.  I called her and we talked for about 30 minutes, she was very surprised!  About three weeks later I received a wonderful 5-page letter from her.

UPDATE:  I recently found out that Aunt Maxine died in September of 2003.  I was (and still am) greatly saddened at her passing.  She was the last family link I had on my father's side.

We had two daughters, Lenore who died of cancer Dec 20, '88 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  She was born May 9, 1937.  She was a violinist and had 3 sons.  And Judith who lives in Steubenville Ohio and was born Feb 22, 1941.  Judy has 2 sons and a grandson.
"Years ago Judy, Al and I drove to Roseville, Ohio where Keith, Virginia, and I were born, just to look around and talk to whom ever we could.  We took a picture of the house where we were born and found a swimming pool in the back yard.  We felt kinda bad that it had been changed.  There were steps going down to the back of the house which extended down with a basement kitchen and dining area.
"We went to the cemetery and took pictures of the Moore family tomb stones there, and recorded dates.  Our Grandfather Moore was a blacksmith and had the only pair of horse stocks in the county (to hold the foot while it was being worked on).  I remember seeing the sparks fly and loved it as he got them red hot and hammered to shape the shoes.  The shop is now a garage, but the owners gave me a brick from the old kiln. They also suggested we see the house.
"C.W. Moore 1850-1927 (your Great Grandparents, Charles) Elizabeth Moore 1851-1928.  Buried in plot #10 in Roseville Cemetery, across from their home.
"I remember having "taken a trip" with Grandpa Moore from Roseville, OH to Zanesville, OH on the train to buy the stocks.  It wasn't far to go but it was a big trip for this little girl.  Also I had my first taste of coffee at their house (it was a bit of coffee poured over crackers at breakfast).  Virginia & Keith were there, too.
"I remember hearing that my brother, Keith, when I was born, went up and down the Roseville streets shouting, "I have a baby sister and her name is Magazine!"
"I recall Keith and Virginia were right there doing the same things I did.  We always played together & with our neighbor friends.  Our precious dog, Queen, was our love and constant companion.  She never seemed to tire of us.
"I have been told by several people what fine and talented parents we had.  Our dad was a barber and sign painter.  But he did many more things.  He had a very "up to date" camera.  It was placed on a tripod with a black cover to put over his head when he took pictures.  He was a fine camera man and had his own dark room for developing.  He also painted pictures and often tinted the photographs.
"Our mother crocheted lace, made our clothes.  We had lace insertion and edging on our slips.  We learned, as we grew up, that Dad and Mother made all of the decorations that were on our Christmas trees.  Keith later told me that he had peeked into the living room on Christmas eve when our parents were decorating, and we were supposed to be sound asleep in our beds!
"We moved from Roseville to Somerset [OH]--Grandma & Grandpa Stickel's home--when our mother became ill with tuberculosis.  They hired a private nurse, "Miss Henthorn," to nurse and take care of sanitation to keep the children healthy and from getting the disease.  Our father worked as a barber in Somerset then.  Our mother, Jennie Catherine Moore, died in 1918 at age 31 (born 1887).  Our father was greatly saddened at her death.  I recall hearing that he said, "The sun will never shine on my face again," and as it was, with his spirit gone, he developed typhoid fever, was taken to a Zanesville hospital and also died about three months later.  So sad that there were no antibiotics or any medications to treat infections then--in fact, when I grew up and Al and I were just married (1933), Al developed step throat and almost died, a very high fever.  Sulfa was just being introduced and the doctor tried it on Al. The doctor later told us "If Al hadn't died of the strep infection, it's a wonder the sulfa hadn't killed him!"  It was so crude then.  This was about 1938 and our parents died in 1918.  I tell you this to show why there were so many deaths earlier, including little children.
"The death of our parents was not just a family affair.  The whole town of Somerset grieved with and for us.  Keith was then 10, I was 8, and Virginia 4.  I've been told our parents had a 4th child--Carl--who died at birth.  He was between Virginia and me.  I can barely recall seeing the little casket sitting by the front door in Roseville.
"We three children lived on with Grandma & Grandpa Stickel in Somerset who by this time were getting quite old.  They had raised their own 7 children.  Grandpa used to trot us on his knee and sing old war songs to us.  He was a Civil War veteran--shot through the body and lungs and lay dying on the battle field in the battle for Missionary Ridge in Gettysburg.  They passed over his body 3 times with a stretcher, on the 4th time he was able to move a bit and raised his hand.  They cut the bullet out of his back right there on the battle field with nothing to dull the pain.  From then on he had to sleep propped up with pillows, in a sitting position.
"I never heard our grandparents say an unkind word to each other, nor use any kind of profanity.  I remember we were't allowed to sing at the table or put our arms on the table when we ate.  They were good in arithmetic and spelling and helped us when we asked for help, and they encouraged us to study.
"I suppose because of the energy drain on our grandparents--their youngest son, Uncle Sherman and his wife Aunt Lesta, of Canton--took Keith to live with them in Canton, OH, as he did for several years.  At times Virginia and I would visit there too as well as with their other children.
"Later Keith seemed to get the wonder-lust and left their home when he was older.  I remember clearly when Keith came driving in saying he had been in Kansas.  He stayed a while and was off again.  I guess there's a little of that traveling spirit in all of us.
"Uncle Sherman and Aunt Lesta, daughter Vera & husband, moved to Florida in later life.  He was the youngest son and the last to die on Oct 28, '88 at age 103.  Viriginia visited him at the nursing home and saw that he had what he needed and wanted.
"Our daughter Judy found some of these pictures of Keith among the pictures I left in her attice when we moved to a mobile home in Texas.  I had a few here, too.  He was a dear, sweet boy as you can see.  We had great times playing together in the back yard.
"Charles, your father lived a long life, after all of his war experience and shell shock.  He said to me, "I can still hear those Japs picking over our trenches."
"You caused me to think a lot about our childhood and I thought about it after I went to bed.
"I wish you and your family the best of good fortune and health."
