"I just came across some notes on the Shaw-Pritchard family.  My problem is I don't know where they came from.  It says Alexander Shaw was born 1771, in Maryland. It also says he married Mary Barclay 13 Jan 1796, in Shenandoah.  It is always possible my dates are wrong, but (1) The 1776 Census of St. John's and Prince Georges, Maryland says: Shaw, Shaw age 27, Keziah Ahe 20 two male children ages 2 and `1.  (2) Marriage Bonds of Shenandoah Co., Virginia list Alexander and Mary Barclay, marriage bond 13 Jan 1796 (3) Marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA Alexander Shaw and Mary Barclay married  13 June 1796."

Notes for John William Shaw:
I received these articles from Jacqueline -- [email protected]

PIONEER LIFE OF JOHN SHAW AND HARRIET NANCY HARRIS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS

This is his story and of those who descend from this early pioneer.

John Shaw was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia on 9 January 1797, the eldest son of Alexander Shaw and Mary Barclay,  Alexander was born in Maryland to Charles and Keziah Shaw.  Mary Barclay, was the daughter of Robert Barclay and Anna Hann, who were Virginians.  Alexander and Mary were married 13 January 1796 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.  Charles Shaw was in the Prince George's quota for Maryland Troope, 1776, Revolutionary War.  Alexander fought in the War of 1812.
The family moved to Ohio, settling in Licking County when John was quite young, and he grew up there.  On 23 June 1821 he married Harriet Nancy Harris, born 14 May 1801, Zanesville, Morgan County, Ohio.  She was the daughter of Joesph Harris of Tennesse.  Two children were born to them in Ohio, Elizabeth and William.  Within a few years they had move to Bernedette Township, Fulton County, Illinois, where the remainder of their children were born.  Mary Ann, Carline, Johanna Maria, Harvey and Sarah Margaret.
By 1838, they and numerous other Shaws and Harrises had filed on land in Fulton County.  Their children grew and married, and they lived there until going to Oregon.
On 28 January 1841, Elizabeth married Nehemiah Northrup.  They lived in Bernedette Township, and had two daughters there, Adline and Mary Ann.  William married Eliza Jane Miller on 16 November 1845.  Three children were born in Illinois, Carline, Thomas and John.  Mary Ann was married on 24 May 1847 to James Harvey McCumber, they had two children,  Reuben and Emmeline.  Carline married Philip Numbers on 24 November 1849 , they had two daughters, Nancy and Melvina.
In 1848 an epidemic of cholera swept through the area.  Elizabeth and Carline nursed the sick and dying, and took the two Prichard children into their homes when their parents died.  The sisters are referred to as two brave women in  "The History of Fulton County, Illinois."
By 1850 Elizabeth was a widow and it was she who wanted to come west.  She convinced her father to undertake the trip to Oregon in 1851.  The group heading west were John, Harvey, age 15 at the time, Elizabeth, and her two daughters.  Forty wagon left Illinois, lead by Captain Williams.  The Shaw wagon was pulled by oxen.  The trip was without serious incident and they arrived in Oregon 2 September 1851.  He settled in the Umpqua Valley, Douglas County, on the Umpqua River, across from the present site of Glide, Oregon,
east of Roseburg. He filed on Oregon Donation Land Claim #69 in Douglas, County.
He immediately erected a log cabin which would house the family through the winter, until the large frame house was built; which stood for many years.  The time was spent clearing land, building fences, making improvements, and settled his claim on 15 September 1852.
He left for his return trip back to Illinois after establishing the D.L.C.  Some say he went via the Isthmus and others claim he made the trip around the horn.  Upon arriving in Illinois he began organizing family members and friends for the Oregon Trail trip to begin in the spring of 1853.
Family members on this trip were his wife, Nancy, and their two youngest daughters Johanna Maria and Sarah Margaret.  William and his wife Eliza, with children, Mary Carline, Thomas and John.  Daughter Mary Ann with her husband Harvey McCumber, and their two children, Reuben and Emmeline.  Carline and Philip Numbers with their children rounded out the Shaw party.  John Shaw was the captain of the wagon train on this trip.
They started out with 24 head of mild cows, but lost most on the trip.  Indians took many, some had to be used for food and others just didn't survive.  The Wagon train was stopped on the banks of the Malheur River in Eastern Oregon on 28 August 1853, when Harvey Malheur (Mal) was born to William and Eliza.  The first Shaw to be born in the Oregon Territory.  In trying to make it through a cut-off, in Oregon, the wagon train became lost for a considerable length of time.  They were without food, except for their own animals, which they killed, also without salt, and were without water for some days.  The first night, when they were finally united with the rest of the family in Douglas County, one of the little boys insisted on going to bed with a biscuit in his hand; so he would have it to eat when he awoke in the morning.
They arived in Douglas County in October 1853, and son William and the son-in-laws lost no time in filing on their Donation Land Clains. William had claim #518 on land at the fot of Scott Mountain, a few miles north of John in Mt. Scott Prescient.  McCumber's claim was #1139 in Winchester Prescient, a little further northwest.  And, Philip Numbers filed #520 further north, closer to Cottage Grove, Oregon.
Hiram Young Dakan, a young unmarried man from Kentucky, traveled over the same route and the Shaw's with a family named Munson, and in the same year.  In 1856 he married Johanna Maria.  They farmed and raised cattle in the Umpqua Valley in the vicinity of John and Nancy.
In Douglas County the family grew in numbers, with many more grandchildren being born, and all prospered.  John Shaw as an orchardist, and raised nursery stock.  They had bees, cattle and sheep, the latter providing wool for Nancy's spinning wheel and weaving.  She had a large loom and provided the material for the family clothing.  She made "linsey-woolsey", a linen or cotton warp with the wool woof.  These she could vary in plaids or stripes.  John liked to sing and would lead the singing during social affairs at the schoolhouse, using a tuning fork.
Their house was a lively place with all heir family living close by, and many grandchildren remembered fondly staying with John and Nancy.  But some tragedies touched their lives.  Carline died the day after her third child, Mary was born.  Grandmother Nancy looked after the three girls until heir father was able to care for them.
Elizabeth had re-married in 1856 to Francis Marion Vliet, who had come west in Samuel Flowere party in 1853.  They had two children, Lewis and Arminda (min or Minda),  However, in 1862 Elizabeth died of pneumonia, and her children also lived with John and Nancy.  As They grew old the lived with their father in the summers; he went prospecting in Southern Oregon in the winters.
And, Harvey McCumber also died in 1862, leaving Mary Ann a widow with seven children.  Three years later she married again, another John Shaw, known a "Cooper" John because of his red hair.  They had no children.
Young Harvey Shaw did some gold mining in Southern Oregon and farmed.  Then in 1861 he went to Eastern Washington,  Walla Walla, area.  From there he and Frank Lowden ran a packed train from Old Wallula to thekootaney area, bring supplies to the mining camps in Idaho.  In 1864 William took his family and moved to Summerville area near La Grand, Oregon.  Mary Ann and "Cooper" John also set out eastward and settled with their family on Butter Creek, near Echo, Oragon, Umitilla area.
In 1869, Harvey bought acreage west of Prescott, on the Touchet River, which grew into a spread o 2200 acres.  Following Harvey, John and Nancy left Douglas County in 1870, and bought land seven miles from Dayton, Washington.
Indians were numerous at that time, the land being taken up by settlers, had been there camping grounds for many generations.  Many settlers welcomed the Indians to continue, and set tracts of land aside for these encampments. It was not unusual to see as many as a hundred teepees at one time on these tract of land.  These Indians were of the Palouse tribe.  The property in Dayton had a tract set aside for the Indians.
Hiram, Maria, and Family soon followed over the Barlow Trail route. The Road was nearly impassable and some members of the party lost their way, nearly dying of thirst.  Jane and Anna Marie, twelve year old twins rode ponies and drove. twelve head of cattle the entire way.  Arriving in Dayton the last day of August, having spent three months on the way.  They lived with the Shaw family for two months before Hiram, who was a saw mill worker moved his family to Indian Valley in the Grande Ronde country, near Elgin, Oregon, in the Wallowa Mountains, via the Lineton Mountain  and Tollgate Road. The girls again drove the cattle.
Thus, Harvey had began the exodus from Douglas County and today there are no descendants of this Shaw line living in Douglas County.
Six years later, the Dakan family returned to Dayton and acquired the Dayton property from John; who at that time had a ranch four miles west of Prescott, near Harvey.  Shaw Bridge and Har-Shaw Road in this area are named for the family.  In 1880 Anna Marie Dakan married Eli Keith.  He and Hiram took up freighting.  The route was between Spokane, a new pioneer town, and Old Wallulla; using Old Whiskey Creek Road as a cut between Dayton and Walla Walla.  Hauling grain to the boats,  heading down river to Portland, supplies to the Nez Perce reservation, near Pendleton, and supplies and lumber to and from the mills in the near by mountains.
William made the final move of his family in 1877, to the Yakima Valley.  They took up five adjacent land claims, but with in a few years they were having so much trouble with people cutting their ditch and taking their water, that they sold out.  They moved in town, and  in 1899, established the Northern Yakima Furniture Co.
By 1880, Harvey was living in Walla Walla; and Nancy and John were with him. John died there 10 October 1888, and Nancy followed, 23 October 1888.  He was 91 years old and she was 87.  The funerals were held in Harvey's home; and both are buried in Blue Mountain Cemetery, Walla Walla.
I want to end this epic using the original biographer, Marion B. Crothers statements:

" John's travels had spanned the continent, and Nancy too was a vigorous and independent person.  In the picture of her note the 'bobbed' hair.  Very rebellious for that day, however, she decided long hair was too much trouble.  SUCH HARDY STOCK,  OUR PIONEER ANCESTORS."

JOHN AND NANCY SHAW
By Marian B. Crothers

John Shaw was one of the earliest settlers in Douglas County, filing on Donation Land Claim #69, Septebmer 2, 1851. Land is across the river from Glide. He came from Fulton County, Illinois. In Captain William's Wagon Train of forty wagons. With him were his oldest daughter Elizabeth Shaw Northrup, a widow with two children Adeline and Anice. His youngest son Harvey drove another team. Family stories say that daughter; Caroline and her husband Phillip Numbers were with them. Records do not seem to bear this out. The trip was without serious incidents, and they arrived in Early September.
He soon erected a log cabin which would house the family until the large frame house was built, and it stood for many years. Time was spent clearing and building fences in preparation for the return trip and he settled his claim August 15, 1852.
John Shaw was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, January 9, 1797, the oldest son of Alexander Shaw and Mary Barclay. She was the daughter of Robert Barclay and Anne Hann, who were Virginians. They were married January 13, 1796 in Shenandoah County. Alexander was born in Maryland to Charles and Keziah Shaw. Charles was in the Prince George's County quota for Maryland Troops 1776, for Continental services.
As a young man John went to Ohio, and in Morgan County June 21, 1821, married Harriet Nancy Harris, born May 14, 1801, Springfield Township, Zanesville, Ohio. She was the daughter of Joseph Harris of Tennessee. Several children were born to them in Ohio, including Elizabeth and William the two oldest.
By 1838, they and numerous other Shaws and Harrises had filed on land in Fulton County, Illinois, Bernadotte Township. They lived there until going to Oregon.
John Shaw left for the trip back to Illinois after settling the Donation Land Claim in August 1852. Some say he went via the Isthmus and others claim he made the trip around the Horn. He soon began organizing family members and friends for the Oregon Trail trip in the spring of 1853. This time he was Captain of the Wagon Train.
Family members on this trip were his wife Nancy, their two youngest children, Johanna Marie and Sarah Margaret, and William Shaw, the oldest son, and his wife Eliza with Mary Carline, Thomas and John. The other daughter, Mary Ann had married James Harvey McCumber, and they with their two children, Reuben and Emmeline rounded out their party. They started with 24 head of milk cows, but lost most on the trip, Indians took many, some had to be used for food, and others just didn't survive.
They arrived in Douglas County in October of 1853, and son William and the sons-in-law lost no time in filing on their Donation Land Claim, all near John Shaw's in the area of the Umpqua River near Glide. William Shaw had claim #618 on land at the foot of Scott Mountain. McCumbers claim was #1129 and that of Phillip Numbers was #520.
John Shaw was an orchardist and raised nursery stock. They had bees, cattle and sheep. The latter providing wool for Nancy's spinning and weaving. She had a large loom and provided the material for the family clothing. She made linsey-woolsey linen or cotton warp with the wool woof. These she could vary in plaid or stripes, dyeing the yarn.  John likes to sing and would lead the singing at community affairs at the schoolhouse, using a tuning fork..
Their home was a lively place with all their family living close by, and the many grandchildren remembered fondly staying with John and Nancy. But some tragedies touched their lives. Caroline died April 26, 1857, the day after her third child was born. Grandmother Nancy looked after Harriet, Sarah and Mary Catherine until their father was able to care for them.
Elizabeth Shaw Northrup, the oldest daughter had married again in November 1856, to Francis Marion Vliet, who had come west in Samuel Flower's party in 1853, also from Fulton County, Illinois. He was born in Tompkins County, New York near Ithaca, June 3 1825, to parents Daniel Z. Vliet and Esther Lacey-Van Loon. They had two children, Lewis, born 1858 and Arminda, March 13, 1860. She and her sister Caroline are written about in a History of Fulton County as two brave women, for they took in the Pritchard children after the parents had died of the dread Cholera, following an 1848 epidemic. So it was these two daughters who died in Oregon, Elizabeth died in March 1862 and her children then lived with John and Nancy, too. As they grew older they lived with their father in the summers. He went prospecting in southern Oregon in the winters.
Harvey McCumber also died in 1862, leaving Mary ann a widow with seven children. Three years later she married again, another John Shaw, known as "Copper" John, (Red Hair?). They had two children.
Young Harvey Shaw did some gold mining in Southern Oregon and farmed too, and in 1861 he went to Eastern Washington, Walla Walla area. From there he "packed" to the mining camps in Idaho, taking in supplies. In 1868 he bought acreage west of Prescott which grew into a spread of 2200 acres. He had started a family exodus from Oregon to Washington. Douglas County how has no descendants from this line of Shaws.
John and Nancy Shaw left Douglas County in 1870 and bought land near Harvey's. Shaw Bridge and Har-Shaw Road in that area are named for the family.  By 1888, Harvey was living in Walla Walla again and the parents were with him.  John died there October 10, 1888, and Nancy followed October 23. He was 91 years old and she was 87. Johns travels had spanned the continent and Nancy too was a vigorous person.  In the picture of her, note the "bobbed" hair. She decided long hair was too much trouble. Such hardy stock our pioneer ancestors!

Notes for Marilyn Jane Shaw:
From the Zanesville Times Recorder of Friday, Dec. 3, 1948:

EMPTY STOLEN PURSE FOUND IN COURTHOUSE

"A purse stolen from Mrs. Keith Moore of East Fultonham in a downtown store Wednesday afternoon was recovered early Thursday in the washroom of the courthouse but the $110 it contained was missing.
"Mrs. Moore said she was in a crowded store and felt she had been bumped or shoved by another woman shopper, but did not see the woman who had grabbed the purse and fled."---

Now this article wouldn't have interested me near as much if it hadn't mentioned that Mrs. Keith Moore was from East Fultonham.  As far as I know there was only one Keith Moore in East Fultonham and that was my father.  According to their marriage certificate they were married in Greenup Co., KY on February 2, 1949.  However, the date of this article is Dec 3, 1948.---

   Another mystery to solve.....

It is further considered and order by the Court that the defendant pay to the plaintiff herein as alimony the sum of Four Dollars ($4.00) each week, the first payment to be made Oct. 13, 1934, and also the unpaid temporary alimony heretofore ordered by this Court, amounting the $57.00, and the same are made a charge of defendant's (Keith Moore) undivided interest in the estate of C.F.
